1Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh,2And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:3Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.4And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan.5But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.6So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their tents.7Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,8And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.9And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.10And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.11And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.12And when the children of Israel heard of it , the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to war against them.13And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,14And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.15And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying,16Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the LORD, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might rebel this day against the LORD?17Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we are not cleansed until this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the LORD,18But that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to day against the LORD, that to morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.19Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD' tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against the LORD, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the LORD our God.20Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.21Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,22The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,)23That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it ;24And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel?25For the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the LORD.26Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:27But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.28Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again , Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.29God forbid that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.30And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them.31And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD.32And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.33And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.34And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed : for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God.

1Damals rief Josua die Rubeniter und Gaditer und den halben Stamm Manasse zu sich,2und er sprach zu ihnen: Ihr habt alles gehalten, was euch Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, geboten hat, und habt meiner Stimme gehorcht in allem, was ich euch geboten habe.3Ihr habt eure Brüder während dieser langen Zeit nicht im Stich gelassen bis zu diesem Tag und habt getreulich festgehalten an dem Gebot des HERRN, eures Gottes.4Weil nun der HERR, euer Gott, eure Brüder zur Ruhe gebracht hat, wie er es ihnen verheißen hat, so kehrt jetzt um und zieht hin in eure Zelte, in das Land eures Erbteils, das euch Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, jenseits des Jordan gegeben hat!5Nehmt euch nur sehr in Acht, dass ihr das Gebot und das Gesetz tut, das euch Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, geboten hat: dass ihr den HERRN, euren Gott, liebt und auf allen seinen Wegen wandelt und seine Gebote befolgt und ihm anhängt und ihm dient von ganzem Herzen und von ganzer Seele!6Und Josua segnete sie und entließ sie; und sie gingen zu ihren Zelten.7Dem halben Stamm Manasse hatte Mose ein Erbteil gegeben in Baschan; der anderen Hälfte gab Josua ein Erbteil unter ihren Brüdern diesseits des Jordan, gegen Westen. Und als Josua sie zu ihren Zelten gehen ließ, da segnete er sie,8und er sprach zu ihnen: Mit großem Gut kehrt ihr nun zurück zu euren Zelten, mit sehr viel Vieh, mit Silber, Gold, Erz, Eisen und mit Kleidern in großer Zahl; teilt die Beute eurer Feinde mit euren Brüdern!9So kehrten die Söhne Rubens, die Söhne Gads und der halbe Stamm Manasse um und zogen von den Söhnen Israels weg, von Silo, das im Land Kanaan liegt, um ins Land Gilead zu ziehen, zum Land ihres Eigentums, das sie dort besaßen, nach dem Befehl des HERRN durch Mose.
Der Altar am Jordan
10Und als sie in die Gegend am Jordan kamen, die im Land Kanaan liegt, bauten die Söhne Rubens, die Söhne Gads und der halbe Stamm Manasse einen Altar dort am Jordan, einen großen, weithin sichtbaren Altar.11Und die Söhne Israels hörten sagen: Siehe, die Söhne Rubens, die Söhne Gads und der halbe Stamm Manasse haben einen Altar gebaut gegenüber dem Land Kanaan, in der Gegend am Jordan, jenseits der Söhne Israels!12Als nun die Söhne Israels dies hörten, da versammelte sich die ganze Gemeinde der Söhne Israels in Silo, um zum Krieg gegen sie hinaufzuziehen.13Und die Söhne Israels schickten Gesandte zu den Söhnen Rubens, den Söhnen Gads und dem halben Stamm Manasse in das Land Gilead: Pinehas, den Sohn Eleasars, den Priester,14und mit ihm zehn Fürsten, je einen von jedem Vaterhaus aller Stämme Israels; jeder war das Haupt seines Vaterhauses unter den Tausenden Israels.15Und diese kamen zu den Söhnen Rubens, zu den Söhnen Gads und zu dem halben Stamm Manasse in das Land Gilead, redeten mit ihnen und sprachen:16So spricht die ganze Gemeinde des HERRN: Was ist das für eine Untreue, die ihr an dem Gott Israels begangen habt, indem ihr euch heute von der Nachfolge des HERRN abkehrt dadurch, dass ihr euch einen Altar baut und euch heute gegen den HERRN auflehnt?17War die Versündigung mit Peor zu wenig für uns, von der wir uns bis zu diesem Tag noch nicht gereinigt haben, und um derentwillen eine Plage über die Gemeinde des HERRN kam?18Und ihr wendet euch heute von der Nachfolge des HERRN ab! Und wenn ihr euch heute gegen den HERRN auflehnt, so wird es geschehen, dass er morgen über die ganze Gemeinde Israels zürnt!19Wenn das Land, das ihr besitzt, unrein ist, so kommt doch herüber in das Land, das der HERR besitzt, wo die Wohnung des HERRN steht, und macht euch ansässig in unserer Mitte! Aber lehnt euch nicht auf gegen den HERRN und lehnt euch nicht gegen uns auf, indem ihr euch einen Altar baut außer dem Altar des HERRN, unseres Gottes!20Ist nicht der Zorn [Gottes] über die ganze Gemeinde Israel gekommen, als Achan, der Sohn Serachs, etwas von dem Gebannten veruntreute? Und er ging nicht allein zugrunde in seiner Schuld!21Da antworteten die Söhne Rubens und die Söhne Gads und der halbe Stamm Manasse und sprachen zu den Obersten der Tausende Israels:22Der Gott der Götter, der HERR, der Gott der Götter, der HERR, er weiß es, und Israel soll es auch wissen: Ist es aus Auflehnung oder Untreue gegen den HERRN geschehen — so hilf du uns heute nicht!23Wenn wir uns den Altar gebaut haben, um uns von der Nachfolge des HERRN abzuwenden, und wenn es geschehen ist, um Brandopfer und Speisopfer darauf zu opfern oder um Friedensopfer darauf zu legen, so soll der HERR Vergeltung üben!24Vielmehr haben wir es aus Besorgnis getan, es könnte eine Sache eintreten, indem wir sprachen: Morgen könnten eure Kinder zu unseren Kindern so sprechen: »Was geht euch der HERR, der Gott Israels, an?25Denn der HERR hat eine Grenze gesetzt zwischen uns und euch, ihr Kinder Rubens und ihr Kinder Gads, nämlich den Jordan; ihr habt keinen Anteil an dem HERRN!« Damit würden eure Kinder bewirken, dass unsere Kinder den HERRN nicht mehr fürchten.26Darum sprachen wir: Wir wollen doch für uns einen Altar machen, nicht für Brandopfer oder Schlachtopfer,27sondern damit er Zeuge sei zwischen uns und euch und zwischen unseren Nachkommen, dass wir den Dienst des HERRN üben wollen vor ihm mit unseren Brandopfern, Schlachtopfern und Friedensopfern, und damit eure Kinder künftig nicht zu unseren Kindern sagen dürfen: »Ihr habt keinen Anteil an dem HERRN!«28Und wir sprachen: Wenn sie aber künftig so zu uns und unseren Nachkommen reden sollten, so können wir sagen: »Seht das Abbild des Altars des HERRN, das unsere Väter gemacht haben, nicht für Brandopfer noch für Schlachtopfer, sondern damit er Zeuge sei zwischen uns und euch!«29Das sei ferne von uns, dass wir uns gegen den HERRN auflehnen, dass wir uns heute von der Nachfolge des HERRN abwenden und einen Altar bauen für Brandopfer, für Speisopfer und für Schlachtopfer, außer dem Altar des HERRN, unseres Gottes, der vor seiner Wohnung steht!30Als aber Pinehas, der Priester, und die Obersten der Gemeinde, die Häupter der Tausende Israels, die mit ihm waren, diese Worte hörten, welche die Söhne Rubens, die Söhne Gads und die Söhne Manasses sagten, da war es recht in ihren Augen.31Und Pinehas, der Sohn Eleasars, der Priester, sprach zu den Söhnen Rubens, den Söhnen Gads und den Söhnen Manasses: Heute erkennen wir, dass der HERR in unserer Mitte ist, weil ihr mit dieser Tat keine Untreue an dem HERRN begangen habt! Nun habt ihr die Kinder Israels aus der Hand des HERRN errettet!32Da kehrten Pinehas, der Sohn Eleasars, der Priester, und die Obersten um von den Söhnen Rubens und den Söhnen Gads aus dem Land Gilead in das Land Kanaan zu den Söhnen Israels und brachten ihnen Bericht.33Und die Sache war recht in den Augen der Söhne Israels. Und die Söhne Israels lobten Gott und sagten nicht mehr, dass sie gegen jene zum Krieg ausziehen wollten, um das Land zu verderben, in dem die Söhne Rubens und die Söhne Gads wohnten.34Und die Söhne Rubens und die Söhne Gads nannten den Altar: Er ist ein Zeuge zwischen uns, dass der HERR Gott ist!
