1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.

13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.

14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.

18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.

21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.

26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Einleitung

1 Den ersten Bericht habe ich verfasst, o Theophilus, über alles, was Jesus anfing zu tun und zu lehren,

2 bis zu dem Tag, da er [in den Himmel] aufgenommen wurde, nachdem er den Aposteln*, die er erwählt hatte, durch den Heiligen Geist Befehl gegeben hatte.

3 Ihnen erwies er sich auch nach seinem Leiden als lebendig durch viele sichere Kennzeichen, indem er ihnen während 40 Tagen erschien und über das Reich Gottes redete.

Die Ankündigung des verheißenen Heiligen Geistes

4 Und als er mit ihnen zusammen war, gebot er ihnen, nicht von Jerusalem zu weichen, sondern die Verheißung des Vaters abzuwarten, die ihr [— so sprach er —] von mir vernommen habt,

5 denn Johannes hat mit Wasser getauft, ihr aber sollt mit Heiligem Geist getauft werden nicht lange nach diesen Tagen.

6 Da fragten ihn die, welche zusammengekommen waren, und sprachen: Herr, stellst du in dieser Zeit für Israel die Königsherrschaft wieder her?

7 Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Es ist nicht eure Sache, die Zeiten oder Zeitpunkte zu kennen, die der Vater in seiner eigenen Vollmacht festgesetzt hat;

8 sondern ihr werdet Kraft empfangen, wenn der Heilige Geist auf euch gekommen ist, und ihr werdet meine Zeugen sein in Jerusalem und in ganz Judäa und Samaria und bis an das Ende der Erde!

Die Himmelfahrt Jesu Christi

9 Und als er dies gesagt hatte, wurde er vor ihren Augen emporgehoben, und eine Wolke nahm ihn auf von ihren Augen weg.

10 Und als sie unverwandt zum Himmel blickten, während er dahinfuhr, siehe, da standen zwei Männer in weißer Kleidung bei ihnen,

11 die sprachen: Ihr Männer von Galiläa, was steht ihr hier und seht zum Himmel? Dieser Jesus, der von euch weg in den Himmel aufgenommen worden ist, wird in derselben Weise wiederkommen, wie ihr ihn habt in den Himmel auffahren sehen!

Die Apostel in Jerusalem

12 Da kehrten sie nach Jerusalem zurück von dem Berg, welcher Ölberg heißt, der nahe bei Jerusalem liegt, einen Sabbatweg* entfernt.

13 Und als sie hineinkamen, gingen sie hinauf in das Obergemach, wo sie sich aufzuhalten pflegten, nämlich Petrus und Jakobus und Johannes und Andreas, Philippus und Thomas, Bartholomäus und Matthäus, Jakobus, der Sohn des Alphäus, und Simon der Zelot und Judas, der Sohn des Jakobus.

14 Diese alle blieben beständig und einmütig im Gebet und Flehen, zusammen mit den Frauen und Maria, der Mutter Jesu, und mit seinen Brüdern.

Matthias wird durchs Los als zwölfter Apostel bestimmt

15 Und in diesen Tagen stand Petrus mitten unter den Jüngern auf und sprach (es waren aber etwa 120 Personen beisammen):

16 Ihr Männer und Brüder, es musste dieses Schriftwort erfüllt werden, das der Heilige Geist durch den Mund Davids vorausgesagt hat über Judas, welcher denen, die Jesus gefangen nahmen, zum Wegweiser wurde.

17 Denn er war zu uns gezählt und hatte das Los dieses Dienstes empfangen.

18 Dieser erwarb einen Acker aus dem Lohn der Ungerechtigkeit, und er stürzte kopfüber hinab, barst mitten entzwei, und alle seine Eingeweide traten heraus.

19 Und das ist allen bekannt geworden, die in Jerusalem wohnen, sodass jener Acker in ihrer eigenen Sprache Akeldama genannt worden ist, das heißt: »Blutacker«.

20 Denn es steht geschrieben im Buch der Psalmen: »Seine Behausung soll öde werden, und niemand soll darin wohnen«, und: »Sein Amt empfange ein anderer«.*

21 So muss nun von den Männern, die mit uns gegangen sind die ganze Zeit über, in welcher der Herr Jesus unter uns ein- und ausging,

22 von der Taufe des Johannes an bis zu dem Tag, da er von uns hinweg aufgenommen wurde — einer von diesen muss mit uns Zeuge seiner Auferstehung werden.

23 Und sie stellten zwei dar: Joseph, genannt Barsabas, mit dem Beinamen Justus, und Matthias.

24 Und sie beteten und sprachen: Herr, du Kenner aller Herzen, zeige an, welchen von diesen beiden du erwählt hast,

25 das Los dieses Dienstes und Apostelamtes zu empfangen, von dem Judas abgewichen ist, um hinzugehen an seinen eigenen Ort!

26 Und sie warfen das Los über sie, und das Los fiel auf Matthias, und er wurde zu den elf Aposteln hinzugezählt.
