1 Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites. 2 And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.) 3 Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the LORD? 4 And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you. 5 And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel, 6 Let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the LORD did choose. And the king said, I will give them . 7 But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD' oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. 8 But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite: 9 And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the hill before the LORD: and they fell all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days , in the beginning of barley harvest. 10 And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night. 11 And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done. 12 And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabeshgilead, which had stolen them from the street of Bethshan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa: 13 And he brought up from thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged. 14 And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land. 15 Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint. 16 And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword , thought to have slain David. 17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel. 18 And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant. 19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver' beam. 20 And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant. 21 And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David slew him. 22 These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

Die Gibeoniter aber gehörten nicht zu den Kindern Israels, sondern waren von den Amoritern übrig geblieben; die Kinder Israels aber hatten ihnen geschworen; dennoch hatte Saul versucht, sie auszurotten in seinem Eifer für die Kinder Israels und Juda. 3 So sprach nun David zu den Gibeonitern: Was soll ich für euch tun? Und womit soll ich Sühne leisten, damit ihr das Erbteil des HERRN segnet? 4 Und die Gibeoniter sprachen zu ihm: Wir verlangen weder Gold noch Silber von Saul und seinem Haus, auch ist uns nicht darum zu tun, jemand in Israel zu töten. Er sprach: Was ihr sagt, das will ich für euch tun! 5 Sie aber sprachen zum König: Von dem Mann, der uns zu vertilgen [gedachte] und unser Unheil ersann, sodass wir in ganz Israel nicht mehr hätten bestehen können, 6 von dessen Söhnen sollen uns sieben Männer gegeben werden, dass wir sie aufhängen vor dem HERRN bei dem Gibea Sauls, des Erwählten des HERRN! Und der König sprach: Ich will sie geben! 7 Aber der König verschonte Mephiboseth, den Sohn Jonathans, des Sohnes Sauls, wegen des Eides bei dem HERRN, der zwischen ihnen war, nämlich zwischen David und Jonathan, dem Sohn Sauls. 8 Aber die beiden Söhne, welche Rizpa, die Tochter des Ajas, dem Saul geboren hatte, Armoni und Mephiboseth, dazu die fünf Söhne, welche Michals [Schwester], die Tochter Sauls, Adriel, dem Sohn Barsillais, dem Mecholathiter, geboren hatte, nahm der König, 9 und er gab sie in die Hand der Gibeoniter, und die hängten sie auf dem Berg vor dem HERRN auf. So fielen diese sieben auf einmal und wurden getötet in den ersten Tagen der Ernte, zu Beginn der Gerstenernte. 10 Da nahm Rizpa, die Tochter des Ajas, das Sacktuch und breitete es für sich auf dem Felsen aus, vom Anfang der Ernte an, bis das Wasser vom Himmel über sie troff; und sie ließ weder bei Tag die Vögel des Himmels auf ihnen ruhen noch die Tiere des Feldes bei Nacht. 11 Als nun dem David berichtet wurde, was Rizpa, die Tochter des Ajas, Sauls Nebenfrau, getan hatte, 12 da ging David hin und holte die Gebeine Sauls und die Gebeine Jonathans, seines Sohnes, von den Bürgern von Jabes-Gilead, die sie von dem [Markt-]Platz in Beth-Schean heimlich weggenommen hatten, wo die Philister sie aufgehängt hatten an dem Tag, als die Philister den Saul auf dem Bergland von Gilboa schlugen. 13 Und er brachte die Gebeine Sauls und die Gebeine seines Sohnes Jonathan von dort herauf; und man sammelte [zu denselben] die Gebeine der Gehängten; 14 und man begrub [sie] mit den Gebeinen Sauls und seines Sohnes Jonathan in Zela, im Land Benjamin, im Grab seines Vaters Kis; man tat alles, was der König geboten hatte. Und danach ließ sich Gott für das Land erbitten.

15 Es erhob sich aber wieder ein Krieg der Philister gegen Israel. Und David zog hinab und seine Knechte mit ihm, und sie kämpften gegen die Philister; David aber wurde müde. 16 Ischbi-Benob aber, einer der Söhne des Rapha, der eine Lanze im Gewicht von 300 Schekel Erz hatte und mit einem neuen Schwert umgürtet war, der sagte, er wolle David erschlagen. 17 Und Abisai, der Sohn der Zeruja, half [David] und schlug den Philister tot. Damals schworen die Männer Davids ihm und sprachen: Du sollst nicht mehr mit uns zum Krieg ausziehen, damit du die Leuchte Israels nicht auslöschst! 18 Und danach kam es nochmals zum Krieg mit den Philistern bei Gob. Da erschlug Sibechai, der Huschatiter, den Soph, der auch einer von den Söhnen Raphas war. 19 Und es erhob sich noch ein Kampf mit den Philistern bei Gob. Da erschlug Elchanan, der Sohn des Jaare-Orgim, ein Bethlehemiter, den Goliath*, den Gatiter; und dieser hatte einen Speer, dessen Schaft wie ein Weberbaum war. 20 Und wieder kam es zum Kampf bei Gat; dort war ein Mann von großer Länge, der hatte je sechs Finger an seinen Händen und je sechs Zehen an seinen Füßen, [insgesamt] 24 an der Zahl; der stammte auch von Rapha ab. 21 Als er nun Israel verhöhnte, erschlug ihn Jonathan, der Sohn Simeis, des Bruders Davids. 22 Diese vier waren dem Rapha in Gat geboren worden, und sie fielen durch die Hand Davids und durch die Hand seiner Knechte.
