Die Kleidung der Priester

1 »Ruf deinen Bruder Aaron und seine Söhne Nadab, Abihu, Eleasar und Itamar herbei! Von allen Israeliten habe ich sie ausgewählt, mir als Priester zu dienen. 2 Lass für deinen Bruder Aaron Kleider anfertigen, würdevoll und prächtig, seinem heiligen Priesteramt angemessen! 3 Gib diesen Auftrag an alle aus deinem Volk weiter, die ich dazu begabt und mit Weisheit erfüllt habe. Sie sollen die Gewänder anfertigen, in denen Aaron zum Priester geweiht wird und mir dient. 4 Die Priesterkleidung besteht aus folgenden Teilen: der Brusttasche, dem Priesterschurz, dem Obergewand, dem gewebten Untergewand, dem Turban und dem Gürtel. Diese heiligen Kleidungsstücke sollen für deinen Bruder Aaron und seine Nachfolger angefertigt werden. Dann kann er mir als Priester dienen. 5 Die Stoffe für die Priesterkleidung sind die gleichen wie für das Zelt: violette, purpurrote und karmesinrote Wolle, feines Leinen und Goldfäden.«

Der Priesterschurz

6 »Der Priesterschurz soll aus Goldfäden, aus violetter, purpurroter und karmesinroter Wolle sowie aus feinem Leinen angefertigt werden, bunt und kunstvoll gewebt. 7 Er soll zwei Bänder haben, die über die Schultern gelegt und vorn und hinten an ihm befestigt werden. 8 Außerdem soll ein Gürtel daran sein, mit dem der Schurz zusammengebunden werden kann. Er besteht aus denselben Stoffen: aus Goldfäden, violetter, purpurroter und karmesinroter Wolle sowie aus feinem Leinen. 9 Dann such zwei kostbare Onyx-Steine aus und lass die Namen der zwölf Stämme Israels darauf eingravieren: 10 jeweils sechs Namen auf einen Stein, in der Reihenfolge, in der die Stammväter geboren wurden. 11 So wie man ein Siegel in Stein eingraviert, sollen die Namen der Stämme in die Edelsteine eingraviert werden. Dann lass die Steine in Gold fassen 12 und auf die Schulterstücke des Priesterschurzes aufsetzen. Wenn Aaron in das Heiligtum geht, trägt er die Namen der Israeliten auf seinen Schultern, und ich, der HERR, werde dann stets an sie denken. 13 Lass außerdem zwei goldene Spangen für die Schulterstücke schmieden, 14 dazu zwei Kettchen aus reinem Gold, wie Schnüre gedreht. Die Kettchen sollen mit den Spangen verbunden werden.«

Die Brusttasche

15 »Lass eine Brusttasche anfertigen; in ihr sollen die Lose aufbewahrt werden, mit denen ihr meinen Willen erfragen könnt. Sie soll kunstvoll gestaltet sein und aus den gleichen Stoffen gewebt werden wie der Priesterschurz: aus Goldfäden, violetter, purpurroter und karmesinroter Wolle sowie aus feinem Leinen. 16 Die Tasche soll quadratisch sein, jede Seite 25 Zentimeter lang; dazu wird der Stoff doppelt gelegt. 17 Lass die Tasche mit vier Reihen goldgefasster Edelsteine besetzen. Die erste Reihe besteht aus je einem Karneol, Topas und Smaragd, 18 die zweite Reihe aus einem Rubin, Saphir und Jaspis, 19 die dritte Reihe aus einem Hyazinth, Achat und Amethyst, 20 die vierte Reihe aus einem Türkis, Onyx und Nephrit. 21 Die zwölf Steine stehen für die zwölf Stämme Israels; auf jedem Stein soll ein Stammesname eingraviert werden, auf dieselbe Art, wie man ein Siegel herstellt. 22 An der Brusttasche sollen die goldenen gedrehten Kettchen angebracht werden. 23 Zur Befestigung dienen zwei goldene Ringe an den beiden oberen Ecken der Tasche. 25 Die anderen Enden der beiden Kettchen führen zu den goldenen Spangen vorn an den Schulterbändern des Priesterschurzes. 26 Auch an den unteren Ecken der Tasche sollen zwei goldene Ringe befestigt werden, und zwar auf der Innenseite, die dem Priesterschurz zugewandt ist. 27 Zwei weitere Ringe aus Gold werden von vorne mit den Schulterstücken des Priesterschurzes verbunden, an deren unterem Ende, dicht bei dem Gürtel, der den Priesterschurz hält. 28 Die Ringe der Brusttasche sollen mit Schnüren aus violettem Purpur mit den Ringen am Priesterschurz verbunden werden. So liegt die Brusttasche oberhalb des Gürtels und kann nicht verrutschen. 29 Wenn Aaron dann ins Heiligtum geht, trägt er die Steine mit den Namen der Stämme Israels an seinem Herzen. So werde ich immer an mein Volk erinnert. 30 In der Brusttasche sollen die beiden Lose ›Urim‹ und ›Tummim‹ aufbewahrt werden. Diese Lose zeigen an, was ich für das Volk Israel entscheide; darum soll Aaron sie immer bei sich haben, wenn er zu mir ins Heiligtum kommt.«

Das Obergewand

31 »Lass ein Obergewand aus violetter Wolle weben, das der Priester unter dem Priesterschurz tragen soll! 32 Die Halsöffnung in der Mitte soll mit einem gewebten Kragen verstärkt werden, damit sie nicht einreißt, ähnlich wie bei einem ledernen Panzerhemd. 33 Am unteren Saum des Gewandes werden ringsum Granatäpfel aus violettem, purpurrotem und karmesinrotem Stoff angebracht und dazwischen kleine goldene Glöckchen, immer abwechselnd. 35 Aaron soll das Gewand tragen, wenn er seinen Dienst ausübt. Man soll das Klingeln hören, wenn er zu mir ins Heiligtum hereinkommt und wenn er wieder hinausgeht. Dann wird er nicht sterben.«

Das Schild auf der Stirn, das Untergewand und der Turban

36 »Lass auch ein kleines Schild aus reinem Gold anfertigen und die Worte eingravieren: ›Dem HERRN geweiht‹! 37 Mit einer Schnur aus violettem Purpur soll es vorn am Turban befestigt werden, 38 so dass es auf Aarons Stirn liegt. Er soll es immer zum Dienst im Heiligtum tragen, weil die Israeliten ein Gebot übersehen könnten, wenn sie mir ihre Opfer darbringen. Doch wenn Aaron mit dem Schild auf der Stirn vor mich tritt, werde ich ihre Schuld vergeben und mich an ihren Gaben erfreuen. 39 Das Untergewand soll aus feinem Leinen gewebt werden, ebenfalls der Turban. Schließlich sollst du noch den bunten Gürtel machen lassen.«

Die Ausstattung der Priester

40 »Auch Aarons Söhne erhalten Gewänder, Gürtel und Turbane, damit sie würdevoll für ihr Amt gekleidet sind. 41 Leg deinem Bruder Aaron und seinen Söhnen ihre Gewänder an! Salbe sie, indem du Öl auf ihren Kopf gießt! Setze sie in ihr Amt ein und weihe sie für den Dienst in meinem Heiligtum! Sie allein sollen mir als Priester dienen. 42 Lass noch leinene Hosen für sie anfertigen, die von der Hüfte bis zu den Oberschenkeln hinabreichen, damit sie unter ihrem Gewand nicht nackt sind. 43 Aaron und seine Söhne sollen die Hosen tragen, wenn sie in das heilige Zelt oder zum Altar kommen, um mir zu opfern. Dann werden sie keine Schuld auf sich laden und müssen nicht sterben. Diese Ordnung gilt Aaron und seinen Nachkommen für alle Zeiten!«

The clothes for the priests

1 ‘Let your brother Aaron be brought to you from among the Israelites. His sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar must also be brought. They will serve me as priests. 2 Make sacred clothes for your brother Aaron. When he is wearing them, people will honour him. They will have respect for him. 3 Speak to all the skilled workers. I have given them the skill to do this kind of work. Tell them to make clothes for Aaron. He will wear them when he is set apart to serve me as priest. 4 The workers must make a chest cloth, a linen apron and an outer robe. They must also make an inner robe, a turban and a belt. They must make sacred clothes for your brother Aaron and his sons. Then they will serve me as priests. 5 Make the workers use thin gold wire, and blue, purple and bright red yarn, and fine linen.

The linen apron

6 ‘Make the linen apron out of thin gold wire, and out of blue, purple and bright red yarn, and out of finely twisted linen. Have a skilled worker make it. 7 It must have two shoulder straps joined to two of its corners. 8 Its skilfully made waistband must be like the apron. The waistband must be part of the apron itself. Make the waistband out of thin gold wire, and out of blue, purple and bright red yarn, and out of finely twisted linen. 9 ‘Get two onyx stones. Carve the names of the sons of Israel on them. 10 Arrange them in the order of their birth. Carve six names on one stone and six on the other. 11 Carve the names of the sons of Israel on the two stones the way a jewel cutter would carve them. Then put the stones in fancy gold settings. 12 Connect them to the shoulder straps of the linen apron. The stones will stand for the sons of Israel. Aaron must carry the names on his shoulders as a constant reminder while he is serving the LORD. 13 Make fancy gold settings. 14 Make two braided chains out of pure gold. Make them like ropes. Join the chains to the settings.

The chest cloth

15 ‘Make a chest cloth that will be used for making decisions. Have a skilled worker make it. Make it like the linen apron. Use thin gold wire, and blue, purple and bright red yarn, and finely twisted linen. 16 Make it 25 centimetres square. Fold it in half. 17 Put four rows of valuable jewels on it. Put carnelian, chrysolite and beryl in the first row. 18 Put turquoise, lapis lazuli and emerald in the second row. 19 Put jacinth, agate and amethyst in the third row. 20 And put topaz, onyx and jasper in the fourth row. Put them in fancy gold settings. 21 Use a total of 12 stones. Use one for each of the names of the sons of Israel. Each stone must be carved with the name of one of the 12 tribes. 22 ‘Make braided chains out of pure gold for the chest cloth. Make them like ropes. 23 Make two gold rings for the chest cloth. Connect them to two corners of it. 24 Join the two gold chains to the rings at the corners of the chest cloth. 25 Join the other ends of the chains to the two settings. Join them to the shoulder straps on the front of the linen apron. 26 Make two gold rings. Connect them to the other two corners of the chest cloth. Put them on the inside edge next to the apron. 27 Make two more gold rings. Connect them to the bottom of the shoulder straps on the front of the apron. Put them close to the seam. Put them right above the waistband of the apron. 28 The rings of the chest cloth must be tied to the rings of the apron. Tie them to the waistband with blue cord. Then the chest cloth will not swing out from the linen apron. 29 ‘When Aaron enters the Holy Room, he will carry the names of the sons of Israel over his heart. Their names will be on the chest cloth of decision. They will be a continuing reminder while he is serving the LORD. 30 Also put the Urim and Thummim into the chest cloth. Then they will be over Aaron’s heart when he comes to serve the LORD. In that way, Aaron will always have what he needs to make decisions for the people of Israel. He will carry the Urim and Thummim over his heart while he is serving the LORD.

More clothes for the priests

31 ‘Make the outer robe of the linen apron completely out of blue cloth. 32 In the centre of the robe, make an opening for the head of the priest. Make an edge like a collar around the opening. Then it will not tear. 33 Make pomegranates out of blue, purple and bright red yarn. Sew them around the hem of the robe. Sew gold bells between them. 34 Sew a gold bell between every two pomegranates all around the hem of the robe. 35 Aaron must wear the robe when he serves as priest. The bells will jingle when he enters the Holy Room while he is serving the LORD. And they will jingle when he goes out. Then he will not die. 36 ‘Make a plate out of pure gold. Carve words on it as if it were an official seal. Carve the words Set apart for the LORD. 37 Tie the plate to the front of the turban with a blue cord. 38 Aaron must wear this plate on his forehead all the time. He will be held responsible for all the sacred gifts the Israelites set apart. Then the LORD will accept the gifts. 39 ‘Make the inner robe out of fine linen. And make the turban out of fine linen. The belt must be made by a person who sews skilfully. 40 Make inner robes, belts and caps for Aaron’s sons. When they are wearing them, people will honour his sons. They will also have respect for them. 41 Put all these clothes on your brother Aaron and his sons. Then pour olive oil on them and prepare them to serve me. Set them apart to serve me as priests. 42 ‘Make linen underwear that reaches from the waist to the thigh. 43 Aaron and the priests in his family line must wear it when they enter the tent of meeting. They must also wear it when they approach the altar to serve in the Holy Room. Then they will not be found guilty and die. ‘For all time to come, that will be a law for Aaron and the priests in his family line.
