1Abram kehrte in den Süden des Landes Kanaan zurück und mit ihm seine Frau und sein Neffe Lot. Ihren ganzen Besitz führten sie mit sich.2Abram war sehr reich. Er besaß viele Viehherden, dazu Silber und Gold.3Sie blieben aber nicht im Süden, sondern zogen in Tagesmärschen nach Bethel – zu jener Stelle, wo sie ihr Zelt zuerst aufgeschlagen hatten, zwischen Bethel und Ai.4Bei dem Altar, den Abram damals aus Steinen erbaut hatte, betete er nun zum HERRN.5Auch Abrams Neffe Lot, der sich ihm angeschlossen hatte, war zu einem reichen Mann geworden: Er besaß Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder und eine große Anzahl von Zelten für sein Gefolge.6Darum gab es nicht genug Weideplätze für alle Viehherden. Sie konnten unmöglich zusammenbleiben,7zumal die Kanaaniter und die Perisiter noch im Land wohnten. Immer wieder gerieten Abrams und Lots Hirten aneinander.8Abram besprach das mit Lot: »Es soll kein böses Blut zwischen unseren Hirten geben! Wir sind doch Verwandte und sollten uns nicht streiten!9Es ist besser, wenn wir uns trennen. Das Land ist groß genug. Entscheide du, wo du dich niederlassen möchtest! Wenn du das Land auf der linken Seite wählst, gehe ich nach rechts. Wenn du lieber nach rechts ziehst, gehe ich nach links.«10Lot betrachtete das Land genau und sah die fruchtbare Jordan-Ebene – überall reich bewässert, bis nach Zoar hin. Später veränderte sich die Landschaft, nachdem der HERR Sodom und Gomorra vernichtet hatte. Jetzt aber sah die Jordan-Ebene aus wie der Garten Eden* oder das Nildelta in Ägypten.11Darum wählte Lot diese Gegend. Er verabschiedete sich von Abram und machte sich auf den Weg nach Osten.12Abram blieb im Land Kanaan, während Lot sich bei den Städten in der Jordan-Ebene aufhielt und mit seinen Zelten umherzog, bis er an die Stadt Sodom herankam.13Die Menschen in dieser Stadt waren voller Bosheit und lebten in ständiger Auflehnung gegen den HERRN.
Gott wiederholt seine Zusage
14Nachdem die beiden sich getrennt hatten, sagte der HERR zu Abram: »Schau dich nach allen Seiten um!15Das ganze Land, alles, was du jetzt siehst, will ich dir und deinen Nachkommen geben – für immer!16Ich will dir so viele Nachkommen schenken, dass sie unzählbar sind wie der Staub auf der Erde!17Mach dich auf den Weg und durchziehe das Land nach allen Richtungen, denn dir will ich es geben!«18Abram zog also weiter und schlug seine Zelte bei den großen Eichen von Mamre auf, nahe bei Hebron. Dort baute er aus Steinen einen Altar für den HERRN.

Abram and Lot separate
1Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev Desert. He took his wife and everything he had. Lot went with him.2Abram had become very rich. He had a lot of livestock and silver and gold.3Abram left the Negev Desert. He went from place to place until he came to Bethel. Then he came to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier.4There he called on the name of the LORD at the altar he had built.5Lot was moving around with Abram. Lot also had flocks and herds and tents.6But the land didn’t have enough food for both Abram and Lot. They had large herds and many servants, so they weren’t able to stay together.7The people who took care of Abram’s herds and those who took care of Lot’s herds began to argue. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.8So Abram said to Lot, ‘Let’s not argue with each other. The people taking care of your herds and those taking care of mine shouldn’t argue with one another either. After all, we’re part of the same family.9Isn’t the whole land in front of you? Let’s separate. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right. If you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.’10Lot looked around. He saw that the whole River Jordan valley towards the town of Zoar had plenty of water. It was like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.11So Lot chose the whole River Jordan valley for himself. Then he started out towards the east. The two men separated.12Abram lived in the land of Canaan. Lot lived among the cities of the River Jordan valley. He set up his tents near Sodom.13The people of Sodom were evil. They were sinning greatly against the LORD.14The LORD spoke to Abram after Lot had left him. He said, ‘Look around from where you are. Look north and south, east and west.15I will give you all the land you see. I will give it for ever to you and your family who comes after you.16I will make them like the dust of the earth. Can dust be counted? If it can, then your family can be counted.17Go! Walk through the land. See how long and wide it is. I am giving it to you.’18So Abram went to live near the large trees of Mamre at Hebron. There he pitched his tents and built an altar to honour the LORD.
