Johannes der Täufer ruft: »Kehrt um zu Gott!«

1 In jener Zeit fing Johannes der Täufer an, in der judäischen Wüste zu predigen. 2 Er rief: »Kehrt um zu Gott! Denn Gottes himmlisches Reich ist nahe.« 3 Über Johannes hatte Gott schon durch den Propheten Jesaja gesagt: »Jemand ruft in der Wüste: ›Macht den Weg frei für den Herrn! Räumt alle Hindernisse weg!‹« 4 Johannes trug ein aus Kamelhaar gewebtes Gewand, das von einem Ledergürtel zusammengehalten wurde. Er ernährte sich von Heuschrecken und wildem Honig. 5 Viele Menschen aus Jerusalem, aus ganz Judäa und der Gegend entlang des Jordan kamen zu ihm. 6 Sie bekannten ihre Sünden und ließen sich von ihm im Jordan taufen. 7 Als er aber sah, dass auch viele Pharisäer und Sadduzäer kamen, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen, hielt er ihnen entgegen: »Ihr Schlangenbrut! Wer hat euch auf den Gedanken gebracht, ihr könntet dem kommenden Gericht Gottes entrinnen? 8 Zeigt durch Taten, dass ihr wirklich zu Gott umkehren wollt! 9 Bildet euch nur nicht ein, ihr könntet euch damit herausreden: ›Abraham ist unser Vater!‹ Ich sage euch: Gott kann selbst aus diesen Steinen hier Nachkommen für Abraham hervorbringen. 10 Schon ist die Axt erhoben, um die Bäume an der Wurzel abzuschlagen. Jeder Baum, der keine guten Früchte bringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen. 11 Wer umkehrt zu Gott, den taufe ich mit Wasser.* Der aber, der nach mir kommen wird, ist viel mächtiger als ich. Ich bin nicht einmal würdig, ihm die Schuhe hinterherzutragen*. Er wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.* 12 Schon hat er die Schaufel in seiner Hand, mit der er die Spreu vom Weizen trennt. Seinen Weizen wird er in die Scheune bringen, die Spreu aber wird er in einem Feuer verbrennen, das nie verlöscht.«

Jesus lässt sich taufen

13 Auch Jesus kam aus seiner Heimat in Galiläa an den Jordan, um sich von Johannes taufen zu lassen. 14 Aber Johannes versuchte, ihn davon abzubringen: »Eigentlich müsste ich doch von dir getauft werden! Und nun kommst du zu mir?« 15 Jesus erwiderte: »Lass es jetzt so geschehen, denn wir müssen alles tun, was Gott will*.« Da gab Johannes nach. 16 Gleich nach der Taufe stieg Jesus wieder aus dem Wasser. In diesem Augenblick öffnete sich der Himmel über ihm, und er sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube herabkommen und sich auf ihm niederlassen. 17 Gleichzeitig sprach eine Stimme vom Himmel: »Dies ist mein geliebter Sohn, über den ich mich von Herzen freue.«

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”* 3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare* the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’” 4 Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, 6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him,* and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son,* with whom I am well pleased.”
