1In jenen Tagen trat Johannes der Täufer auf und verkündete in der Wüste von Judäa:2Kehrt um! Denn das Himmelreich ist nahe.3Er war es, von dem der Prophet Jesaja gesagt hat:
Stimme eines Rufers in der Wüste: / Bereitet den Weg des Herrn! / Macht gerade seine Straßen!4Johannes trug ein Gewand aus Kamelhaaren und einen ledernen Gürtel um seine Hüften; Heuschrecken und wilder Honig waren seine Nahrung.5Die Leute von Jerusalem und ganz Judäa und aus der ganzen Jordangegend zogen zu ihm hinaus;6sie bekannten ihre Sünden und ließen sich im Jordan von ihm taufen.7Als Johannes sah, dass viele Pharisäer und Sadduzäer zur Taufe kamen, sagte er zu ihnen: Ihr Schlangenbrut, wer hat euch denn gelehrt, dass ihr dem kommenden Zorngericht entrinnen könnt?8Bringt Frucht hervor, die eure Umkehr zeigt,9und meint nicht, ihr könntet sagen: Wir haben Abraham zum Vater. Denn ich sage euch: Gott kann aus diesen Steinen dem Abraham Kinder erwecken.10Schon ist die Axt an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt; jeder Baum, der keine gute Frucht hervorbringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.11Ich taufe euch mit Wasser zur Umkehr. Der aber, der nach mir kommt, ist stärker als ich und ich bin es nicht wert, ihm die Sandalen auszuziehen. Er wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.12Schon hält er die Schaufel in der Hand; und er wird seine Tenne reinigen und den Weizen in seine Scheune sammeln; die Spreu aber wird er in nie erlöschendem Feuer verbrennen.

13Zu dieser Zeit kam Jesus von Galiläa an den Jordan zu Johannes, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen.14Johannes aber wollte es nicht zulassen und sagte zu ihm: Ich müsste von dir getauft werden und du kommst zu mir?15Jesus antwortete ihm: Lass es nur zu! Denn so können wir die Gerechtigkeit ganz erfüllen. Da gab Johannes nach.16Als Jesus getauft war, stieg er sogleich aus dem Wasser herauf. Und siehe, da öffnete sich der Himmel und er sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube auf sich herabkommen.17Und siehe, eine Stimme aus dem Himmel sprach: Dieser ist mein geliebter Sohn, an dem ich Wohlgefallen gefunden habe.

John the Baptist prepares the way
1In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea2and saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’3This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: ‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.” ’4John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt round his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.5People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan.6Confessing their sins, they were baptised by him in the River Jordan.7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptising, he said to them: ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?8Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.9And do not think you can say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.” I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.10The axe has been laid to the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.11‘I baptise you with* water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptise you with* the Holy Spirit and fire.12His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’
The baptism of Jesus
13Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John.14But John tried to deter him, saying, ‘I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?’15Jesus replied, ‘Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then John consented.16As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.17And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’
