1Jetzt gilt dieses Gebot für euch, ihr Priester:2Wenn ihr nicht hört / und nicht von Herzen darauf bedacht seid,
meinen Namen in Ehren zu halten / - spricht der HERR der Heerscharen -,
dann schleudere ich meinen Fluch gegen euch / und verfluche den Segen, der auf euch ruht;
ja, ich habe ihn schon verflucht, / weil ihr nicht von Herzen darauf bedacht seid.3Siehe, ich schlage euch den Arm ab / und werfe euch Unrat ins Gesicht,
den Unrat eurer Feste, / und man wird euch zu ihm hinausschaffen.4Dann werdet ihr erkennen, / dass ich dieses Gebot über euch erlassen habe,
damit mein Bund mit Levi / bestehen bleibe, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen.5Mein Bund bedeutete für ihn / Leben und Heil, beides gab ich ihm, dazu Ehrfurcht:
Er sollte mich fürchten / und vor meinem Namen erschrecken.6Zuverlässige Weisung kam aus seinem Mund, / nichts Verkehrtes fand sich auf seinen Lippen,
in Frieden und Aufrichtigkeit ging er mit mir seinen Weg / und viele hielt er davon ab, schuldig zu werden.7Ja, die Lippen des Priesters bewahren Erkenntnis / und aus seinem Mund erwartet man Weisung; / denn er ist der Bote des HERRN der Heerscharen.8Ihr aber, ihr seid abgewichen vom Weg, / ihr habt viele zu Fall gebracht durch eure Weisung;
ihr habt den Bund Levis zunichte gemacht, / spricht der HERR der Heerscharen.9Darum mache ich euch verächtlich / und erniedrige euch vor dem ganzen Volk,
so wie ihr euch nicht an meine Wege haltet / und auf die Person seht bei der Weisung.
GEGEN TREULOSIGKEIT UND EHESCHEIDUNG
10Haben wir nicht alle denselben Vater? / Hat nicht der eine Gott uns erschaffen?
Warum handeln wir dann treulos, einer gegen den andern, / und entweihen den Bund unserer Väter?11Treulos hat Juda gehandelt / und Gräueltaten sind in Israel und in Jerusalem geschehen:
Denn Juda hat das Heiligtum des HERRN, das er liebt, entweiht / und die Tochter eines fremden Gottes zur Frau genommen.12Der HERR versage dem, der so handelt, / einen, der für ihn zeugt und für ihn spricht
in den Zelten Jakobs, / einen, der dem HERRN der Heerscharen Opfer darbringt.*13Außerdem tut ihr noch dies: Ihr bedeckt den Altar des HERRN mit Tränen, / mit Weinen und Klagen,
weil er sich eurem Opfer nicht mehr zuwendet / und es nicht mehr gnädig annimmt aus eurer Hand.14Und wenn ihr fragt: Warum?: / Weil der HERR Zeuge war zwischen dir und der Frau deiner Jugend, an der du treulos handelst, / obwohl sie deine Gefährtin ist, / die Frau, mit der du einen Bund geschlossen hast.15Nicht einer hat doch jemals so gehandelt, / wenn er einen Rest von verständigem Geist besitzt.
Was begehrt denn dieser Eine? / Er begehrt Nachkommen von Gott!
Bewahrt euch also euren verständigen Geist! / Handle nicht treulos an der Frau deiner Jugend!*16Wenn einer seine Frau aus Abneigung verstößt, / spricht der HERR, Israels Gott,
dann bedeckt er sein Gewand mit Gewalttat, / spricht der HERR der Heerscharen.
Bewahrt euch also euren verständigen Geist / und handelt nicht treulos!
GERICHT UND LÄUTERUNG
17Ihr ermüdet den HERRN mit euren Reden / und ihr fragt: Wodurch ermüden wir ihn?
Dadurch, dass ihr sagt: Jeder, der Böses tut, / ist gut in den Augen des HERRN,
an solchen Leuten hat er Gefallen. / Oder: Wo ist denn Gott, der Gericht hält?

Additional warning to the priests
1‘And now, you priests, this warning is for you.2If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honour my name,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honour me.3‘Because of you I will rebuke your descendants*; I will smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it.4And you will know that I have sent you this warning so that my covenant with Levi may continue,’ says the Lord Almighty.5‘My covenant was with him, a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him; this called for reverence and he revered me and stood in awe of my name.6True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin.7‘For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth.8But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,’ says the Lord Almighty.9‘So I have caused you to be despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.’
Breaking covenant through divorce
10Do we not all have one Father*? Did not one God create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our ancestors by being unfaithful to one another?11Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god.12As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the Lord remove him from the tents of Jacob* – even though he brings an offering to the Lord Almighty.13Another thing you do: you flood the Lord’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer looks with favour on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands.14You ask, ‘Why?’ It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.15Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring.* So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.16‘The man who hates and divorces his wife,’ says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘does violence to the one he should protect,’* says the Lord Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.
Breaking covenant through injustice
17You have wearied the Lord with your words. ‘How have we wearied him?’ you ask. By saying, ‘All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, and he is pleased with them’ or ‘Where is the God of justice?’
