1Gott sprach zu Jakob: Steh auf, zieh nach Bet-El hinauf und lass dich dort nieder! Errichte dort einen Altar dem Gott, der dir auf der Flucht vor deinem Bruder Esau erschienen ist!2Dann sagte Jakob zu seinem Haus und zu allen, die bei ihm waren: Entfernt die fremden Götter aus eurer Mitte, reinigt euch und wechselt eure Kleider!3Wir wollen uns aufmachen und nach Bet-El hinaufziehen. Dort will ich einen Altar für den Gott errichten, der mich am Tag meiner Bedrängnis erhört hat und der auf dem Weg, den ich gegangen bin, mit mir war.4Sie übergaben Jakob alle fremden Götter, die sie in ihren Händen hatten, und die Ringe an ihren Ohren. Jakob vergrub sie unter der Terebinthe bei Sichem.5Dann brachen sie auf. Da überkam ein Gottesschrecken die Städte ringsum und sie verfolgten die Söhne Jakobs nicht.6Jakob kam nach Lus, das im Land Kanaan liegt und jetzt Bet-El heißt, er und alles Volk, das bei ihm war.7Er baute dort einen Altar und nannte die Stätte Gott von Bet-El; denn auf der Flucht vor seinem Bruder hatte Gott sich ihm dort offenbart.8Debora, die Amme Rebekkas, starb. Man begrub sie unterhalb von Bet-El unter der Eiche. Er gab ihr den Namen Träneneiche.9Gott erschien Jakob noch einmal, als er aus Paddan-Aram kam, und segnete ihn.10Gott sprach zu ihm: Dein Name ist Jakob. Dein Name soll jedoch nicht mehr Jakob lauten, sondern Israel soll dein Name sein. Er gab ihm also den Namen Israel.11Und Gott sprach zu ihm: Ich bin El-Schaddai. Sei fruchtbar und vermehre dich! Ein Volk, eine Schar von Völkern soll aus dir werden, Könige sollen aus deinen Lenden hervorgehen.12Das Land, das ich Abraham und Isaak gegeben habe, will ich dir geben und auch deinen Nachkommen will ich es geben.13An dem Ort, an dem er mit ihm geredet hatte, fuhr Gott von ihm empor.14Jakob richtete an dem Ort, wo Gott mit ihm geredet hatte, ein Steinmal, einen Gedenkstein, auf. Darüber schüttete er ein Trankopfer und goss Öl darauf.15Jakob gab dem Ort, an dem Gott mit ihm geredet hatte, den Namen Bet-El.
Benjamins Geburt und Rahels Tod
16Sie brachen von Bet-El auf. Es war nur noch eine kurze Strecke bis Efrata, als Rahel gebar. Sie hatte eine schwere Geburt.17Da sie eine so schwere Geburt hatte, sagte ihr die Hebamme: Fürchte dich nicht, auch diesmal hast du einen Sohn.18Während die Lebenskraft sie verließ - denn sie lag im Sterben -, gab sie ihm den Namen Ben-Oni - Sohn meiner Not -; sein Vater aber nannte ihn Benjamin - Sohn der Rechten -.*19Als Rahel gestorben war, begrub man sie an der Straße nach Efrata, das jetzt Betlehem heißt.20Jakob errichtete ein Steinmal über ihrem Grab. Das ist bis heute das Grabmal Rahels.
Die Söhne Jakobs und Isaaks Tod
21Israel brach auf und schlug sein Zelt jenseits von Migdal-Eder auf.22Während Israel in jenem Land wohnte, ging Ruben hin und schlief mit Bilha, der Nebenfrau seines Vaters. Israel hörte davon. Jakob hatte zwölf Söhne.23Die Söhne Leas waren: Ruben, der Erstgeborene Jakobs, und Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issachar und Sebulon.24Die Söhne Rahels waren: Josef und Benjamin.25Die Söhne Bilhas, der Magd Rahels, waren: Dan und Naftali.26Die Söhne Silpas, der Magd Leas, waren: Gad und Ascher. Das waren die Söhne Jakobs, die ihm in Paddan-Aram geboren wurden.27Jakob kam zu seinem Vater Isaak nach Mamre, nach Kirjat-Arba, das jetzt Hebron heißt, wo sich Abraham und Isaak als Fremde aufgehalten hatten.28Isaak wurde hundertachtzig Jahre alt,29dann verschied er. Er starb und wurde mit seinen Vorfahren vereint, betagt und satt an Jahren. Seine Söhne Esau und Jakob begruben ihn.

Jacob returns to Bethel
1Then God said to Jacob, ‘Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.’2So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, ‘Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.3Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.’4So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem.5Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no-one pursued them.6Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.7There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel,* because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.8Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under the oak outside Bethel. So it was named Allon Bakuth.*9After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,* God appeared to him again and blessed him.10God said to him, ‘Your name is Jacob,* but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.*’ So he named him Israel.11And God said to him, ‘I am God Almighty*; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.12The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.’13Then God went up from him at the place where he had talked with him.14Jacob set up a stone pillar at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it.15Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.*
The deaths of Rachel and Isaac
16Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty.17And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife said to her, ‘Don’t despair, for you have another son.’18As she breathed her last – for she was dying – she named her son Ben-Oni.* But his father named him Benjamin.*19So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).20Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day that pillar marks Rachel’s tomb.21Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder.22While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard of it. Jacob had twelve sons:23The sons of Leah: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.24The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.25The sons of Rachel’s servant Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali.26The sons of Leah’s servant Zilpah: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.27Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre, near Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.28Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years.29Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
