The Altar of Incense

1 “You shall make an altar on which to burn incense; you shall make it of acacia wood. 2 A cubit* shall be its length, and a cubit its breadth. It shall be square, and two cubits shall be its height. Its horns shall be of one piece with it. 3 You shall overlay it with pure gold, its top and around its sides and its horns. And you shall make a molding of gold around it. 4 And you shall make two golden rings for it. Under its molding on two opposite sides of it you shall make them, and they shall be holders for poles with which to carry it. 5 You shall make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. 6 And you shall put it in front of the veil that is above the ark of the testimony, in front of the mercy seat that is above the testimony, where I will meet with you. 7 And Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it. Every morning when he dresses the lamps he shall burn it, 8 and when Aaron sets up the lamps at twilight, he shall burn it, a regular incense offering before the Lord throughout your generations. 9 You shall not offer unauthorized incense on it, or a burnt offering, or a grain offering, and you shall not pour a drink offering on it. 10 Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year. With the blood of the sin offering of atonement he shall make atonement for it once in the year throughout your generations. It is most holy to the Lord.”

The Census Tax

11 The Lord said to Moses, 12 “When you take the census of the people of Israel, then each shall give a ransom for his life to the Lord when you number them, that there be no plague among them when you number them. 13 Each one who is numbered in the census shall give this: half a shekel* according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty gerahs),* half a shekel as an offering to the Lord. 14 Everyone who is numbered in the census, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the Lord’s offering. 15 The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than the half shekel, when you give the Lord’s offering to make atonement for your lives. 16 You shall take the atonement money from the people of Israel and shall give it for the service of the tent of meeting, that it may bring the people of Israel to remembrance before the Lord, so as to make atonement for your lives.”

The Bronze Basin

17 The Lord said to Moses, 18 “You shall also make a basin of bronze, with its stand of bronze, for washing. You shall put it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and you shall put water in it, 19 with which Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet. 20 When they go into the tent of meeting, or when they come near the altar to minister, to burn a food offering* to the Lord, they shall wash with water, so that they may not die. 21 They shall wash their hands and their feet, so that they may not die. It shall be a statute forever to them, even to him and to his offspring throughout their generations.”

The Anointing Oil and Incense

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Take the finest spices: of liquid myrrh 500 shekels, and of sweet-smelling cinnamon half as much, that is, 250, and 250 of aromatic cane, 24 and 500 of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin* of olive oil. 25 And you shall make of these a sacred anointing oil blended as by the perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil. 26 With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, 27 and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, 28 and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils and the basin and its stand. 29 You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy. Whatever touches them will become holy. 30 You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests. 31 And you shall say to the people of Israel, ‘This shall be my holy anointing oil throughout your generations. 32 It shall not be poured on the body of an ordinary person, and you shall make no other like it in composition. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you. 33 Whoever compounds any like it or whoever puts any of it on an outsider shall be cut off from his people.’” 34 The Lord said to Moses, “Take sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum, sweet spices with pure frankincense (of each shall there be an equal part), 35 and make an incense blended as by the perfumer, seasoned with salt, pure and holy. 36 You shall beat some of it very small, and put part of it before the testimony in the tent of meeting where I shall meet with you. It shall be most holy for you. 37 And the incense that you shall make according to its composition, you shall not make for yourselves. It shall be for you holy to the Lord. 38 Whoever makes any like it to use as perfume shall be cut off from his people.”

Der Räucheraltar

1 Bau* aus Akazienholz einen Altar, auf dem man Räucherwerk verbrennen kann. 2 Seine Grundfläche soll quadratisch sein, ein halber Meter* mal ein halber Meter*, und seine Höhe soll einen Meter* betragen. Seine Hörner dürfen nicht aufgesetzt werden, sondern müssen mit dem Altar aus einem Stück gearbeitet sein. 3 Überziehe ihn mitsamt seinen Hörnern von allen Seiten mit Gold und bring ringsum eine goldene Zierleiste an. 4 Gieß je zwei goldene Ringe für die Seitenwände des Altars und befestige sie unterhalb der Zierleisten. 5 Fertige die Tragestangen aus Akazienholz und überziehe sie mit Gold. 6 Stell den Altar vor dem Vorhang auf, der die Bundeslade mit den Gesetzestafeln* – den Ort, wo ich euch begegnen werde – verhüllt. 7 Aaron soll jeden Morgen, wenn er die Öllampen in Ordnung bringt, auf dem Altar wohlriechendes Räucherwerk darbringen. 8 Auch in der Abenddämmerung, wenn er die Öllampen wieder auf den Leuchter stellt, soll er jedes Mal Räucherwerk verbrennen. Auf diese Weise steigt täglich ein wohlriechender Duft zu mir, dem HERRN, auf. So sollen es auch die kommenden Generationen halten.* 9 Auf dem Räucheraltar dürft ihr weder unerlaubtes Räucherwerk noch Brandopfer noch Speiseopfer darbringen. Gießt auch kein Trankopfer über ihm aus. 10 Einmal im Jahr soll Aaron an den Hörnern des Altars das Sühneritual vollziehen. Er soll sie mit etwas Blut vom jährlichen Versöhnungsopfer* bestreichen und den Altar dadurch reinigen. In allen Generationen soll das einmal im Jahr geschehen. Der Altar ist in besonderem Maße heilig und mir, dem HERRN, geweiht.«

Kopfsteuer für das Heiligtum

11 Der HERR sagte zu Mose: 12 »Wenn du die wehrfähigen Israeliten zählst, um ihre Gesamtzahl zu erfassen, muss jeder, der gezählt wird, mir, dem HERRN, ein Lösegeld* entrichten. Dann wird die Israeliten bei der Zählung kein Unglück treffen. 13 Jeder Gezählte* muss ein halbes Silberstück* bezahlen. Dabei gilt der Gewichtswert des Heiligtums, bei dem ein Silberstück zwölf Gramm* wiegt. Die Abgabe für mich, den HERRN, beträgt also sechs Gramm Silber. 14 Alle, die erfasst werden – das heißt alle Männer ab zwanzig Jahren –, müssen mir diese Abgabe leisten. 15 Wer reich ist, soll nicht mehr, und wer arm ist, nicht weniger als das halbe Silberstück geben. Mit dieser Abgabe bezahlt ihr mir, dem HERRN, ein Lösegeld für euer Leben*. 16 Sammle das Geld von den Israeliten ein und stell es für den Dienst am Zelt der Begegnung zur Verfügung. Es wird mich daran erinnern, das Leben der Israeliten zu bewahren.*«

Das Wasserbecken

17 Der HERR sagte zu Mose: 18 »Fertige für die Waschungen ein bronzenes Wasserbecken mit einem bronzenen Untergestell an. Stell es zwischen dem Zelt der Begegnung und dem Brandopferaltar auf und füll es mit Wasser. 19 Aaron und seine Söhne sollen mit diesem Wasser ihre Hände und Füße waschen, 20 bevor sie das Zelt der Begegnung betreten oder zum Brandopferaltar gehen, um für mich, den HERRN, ein Opfer zu verbrennen. Wenn sie sich nicht waschen, müssen sie sterben. 21 Nur wenn sie ihre Hände und Füße waschen, sterben sie nicht. Diese Bestimmung gilt für Aaron und seine Nachkommen durch alle Generationen.«

Das heilige Salböl

22 Der HERR sagte zu Mose: 23 »Nimm die besten Duftstoffe: sechs Kilogramm Myrrhe, drei Kilogramm wohlriechenden Zimt und drei Kilogramm Kalmus, 24 außerdem sechs Kilogramm* Kassia – es gilt das im Heiligtum übliche Gewicht – sowie vier Liter* Olivenöl. 25 Bereite daraus in sorgfältiger, fachmännischer Arbeit ein heiliges Salböl zu.* Es ist dazu bestimmt, alles zu salben, was mir geweiht wird.* 26 Salbe damit das Begegnungszelt, die Lade mit den Gesetzestafeln*, 27 den Tisch und sein gesamtes Zubehör, den Leuchter und sein Zubehör, den Räucheraltar, 28 den Brandopferaltar und sein gesamtes Zubehör sowie das Wasserbecken mit seinem Untergestell. 29 Dadurch weihst du mir all diese Gegenstände, und sie werden in besonderem Maße heilig. Alles, was mit ihnen in Berührung kommt, verfällt dem Heiligtum*. 30 Salbe auch Aaron und seine Söhne mit diesem Öl und weihe sie mir so zu Priestern. 31 Erkläre den Israeliten: ›Dieses Öl ist dazu bestimmt, alles zu salben, was mir, dem HERRN, geweiht ist. Das gilt für alle künftigen Generationen.*‹ 32 Gewöhnliche Menschen dürfen damit nicht in Berührung kommen. Stellt kein Öl in dieser Zusammensetzung für euren persönlichen Gebrauch her. Dieses Salböl ist mir, dem HERRN, geweiht. Betrachtet es als heilig. 33 Wer ein Öl in dieser Zusammensetzung herstellt oder eine gewöhnliche Person damit salbt, wird aus dem Volk ausgestoßen und muss sterben.«

Das heilige Räucherwerk

34 Weiter sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Nimm wohlriechende Gewürze, und zwar zu gleichen Teilen Stakte, Räucherklaue, Galbanum, Gewürzkräuter und reinen Weihrauch. 35 Stell aus diesen Zutaten auf fachmännische Weise* Räucherwerk her. Füge dieser Mischung noch etwas Salz hinzu und achte bei der Zubereitung auf Reinheit; denk daran, dass es heilig ist. 36 Zerreibe einen Teil des Räucherwerks zu feinem Pulver und bewahre es im Zelt der Begegnung auf, vor der Lade mit den Gesetztestafeln*, wo ich euch begegnen will. Es soll bei euch als etwas besonders Heiliges gelten. 37 Niemand darf Räucherwerk in dieser Zusammensetzung für sich selbst zubereiten. Vergesst nicht, dass es ausschließlich für mich, den HERRN, bestimmt ist.* 38 Wer es herstellt, um seinen Duft selbst zu genießen, der wird aus dem Volk ausgestoßen und muss sterben.«
