Israel at Mount Sinai

1 On the third new moon after the people of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. 2 They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel encamped before the mountain, 3 while Moses went up to God. The Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.” 7 So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. 8 All the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord. 9 And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am coming to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever.” When Moses told the words of the people to the Lord, 10 the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments 11 and be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 And you shall set limits for the people all around, saying, ‘Take care not to go up into the mountain or touch the edge of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death. 13 No hand shall touch him, but he shall be stoned or shot;* whether beast or man, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds a long blast, they shall come up to the mountain.” 14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and consecrated the people; and they washed their garments. 15 And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not go near a woman.” 16 On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled. 17 Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly. 19 And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder. 20 The Lord came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. And the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. 21 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go down and warn the people, lest they break through to the Lord to look and many of them perish. 22 Also let the priests who come near to the Lord consecrate themselves, lest the Lord break out against them.” 23 And Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for you yourself warned us, saying, ‘Set limits around the mountain and consecrate it.’” 24 And the Lord said to him, “Go down, and come up bringing Aaron with you. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the Lord, lest he break out against them.” 25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.

1 Genau zwei Monate nach ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten* erreichten die Israeliten die Wüste Sinai. 2 Sie waren von Refidim aufgebrochen und schlugen nun in der Wüste, am Fuß des Berges Sinai, ihr Lager auf. 3 Mose stieg den Berg hinauf zu Gott. Da rief der HERR vom Berg herab: »Richte den Israeliten, den Nachkommen Jakobs, folgende Botschaft aus:* 4 ›Ihr habt selbst gesehen, was ich den Ägyptern angetan habe. Euch dagegen habe ich auf Flügeln getragen wie ein Adler seine Jungen und euch wohlbehalten hierher zu mir gebracht. 5 Jetzt sollt ihr wissen: Wenn ihr meine Worte sorgsam beachtet und euch an die Bestimmungen des Bundes haltet, den ich mit euch schließen werde*, dann werdet ihr mein besonderes Eigentum sein. Solch eine Stellung hat kein anderes Volk.* Mir gehört zwar die ganze Welt, 6 aber ihr sollt für mich ein Königreich von Priestern sein, ein Volk, das mir geweiht ist.‹ Diese Worte sollst du den Israeliten übermitteln.« 7 Als Mose zurückkam, rief er die führenden Männer des Volkes zusammen und berichtete ihnen alles, was der HERR ihm aufgetragen hatte. 8 Das ganze Volk antwortete einmütig: »Alles, was der HERR gesagt hat, wollen wir tun!« Mose überbrachte dem HERRN die Antwort des Volkes. 9 Da sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Ich werde in einer dichten Wolke zu dir kommen. So kann das Volk hören, wie ich mit dir rede, damit es dir für alle Zeit Glauben schenkt.« Als Mose dem HERRN die Antwort des Volkes überbrachte, 10 sagte der HERR außerdem zu ihm: »Geh zum Volk und sorge dafür, dass sie sich heute und morgen auf die Begegnung mit mir vorbereiten: Sie sollen sich reinigen* und ihre Kleider waschen, 11 damit sie übermorgen* bereit sind. Denn an diesem Tag werde ich, der HERR, vor aller Augen auf den Berg Sinai herabkommen. 12 Darum ziehe eine Grenze um den Berg und warne das Volk: ›Hütet euch davor, den Berg zu besteigen oder seine Ausläufer zu betreten. Wer dies tut, muss sterben! 13 Jeder, der den Berg berührt, muss gesteinigt oder mit Speeren und Pfeilen erschossen werden.* Er darf nicht am Leben bleiben. Das gilt für Menschen und Tiere. Erst wenn das Widderhorn langanhaltend ertönt, dürfen diejenigen, die ich dazu bestimme*, auf den Berg steigen.‹« 14 Mose stieg vom Berg herab und kam zum Volk zurück. Er befahl ihnen, sich zu reinigen und auf die Begegnung mit Gott vorzubereiten*, und ließ sie ihre Kleider waschen. 15 Er sagte ihnen: »Macht euch für übermorgen* bereit! Bis dahin dürft ihr keinen Geschlechtsverkehr haben.«

Gott kommt auf den Berg Sinai herab

16 Am übernächsten Morgen* begann es zu donnern und zu blitzen. Eine dichte Wolke hüllte den Berggipfel ein, und das laute Signal eines Widderhorns ertönte. Die Leute im Lager zitterten vor Angst. 17 Mose führte das Volk aus dem Lager hinaus, damit sie Gott begegnen konnten. Am Fuß des Berges stellten sie sich auf. 18 Der Sinai war ganz in Rauch gehüllt, während der HERR umgeben von Feuer auf ihn herabkam. Rauchsäulen stiegen auf wie von einem Schmelzofen, der ganze Berg bebte heftig, 19 und der Schall des Widderhorns wurde immer lauter. Mose sprach mit Gott, und Gott antwortete ihm mit lauter Stimme*. 20 So kam der HERR auf den Gipfel des Berges Sinai herab. Er rief Mose zu sich auf den Gipfel, und Mose stieg hinauf. 21 Doch dann befahl ihm der HERR: »Geh wieder hinunter und warne das Volk. Sie dürfen auf keinen Fall die Abgrenzung durchbrechen, um mich, den HERRN, zu sehen, sonst werden viele von ihnen sterben. 22 Selbst die Priester, die sich mir regelmäßig zum Opferdienst nähern, müssen sich reinigen und auf die Begegnung mit mir vorbereiten*, damit ich in ihre Reihen keine Lücke reiße*.« 23 Mose antwortete dem HERRN: »Das Volk kann ja gar nicht auf den Berg steigen, denn du selbst hast uns schließlich gewarnt und befohlen, eine Grenze um den Berg zu ziehen und ihn zu einem heiligen Ort zu erklären.« 24 Doch der HERR erwiderte: »Steig trotzdem hinab und komm zusammen mit Aaron wieder herauf! Weder die Priester noch das Volk dürfen die Grenze überschreiten und zu mir, dem HERRN, hinaufsteigen, damit ich in ihre Reihen keine Lücke reiße.« 25 So ging Mose wieder hinunter zum Volk und richtete ihnen aus, was Gott gesagt hatte.
