1En aquellos días se presentó Juan el Bautista proclamando en el desierto de Judea,2diciendo: Arrepentíos, porque el reino de los cielos se ha acercado.3Pues éste es el anunciado por el profeta Isaías, cuando dice: Voz de uno que clama en el desierto: Preparad el camino del Señor, Haced llanas sus sendas.4Y este Juan tenía su vestido de pelos de camello y un cinto de cuero alrededor de su cintura, y su comida era langostas y miel silvestre.5Y acudían a él Jerusalem y toda Judea, y toda la región en torno al Jordán,6y eran bautizados por él en el río Jordán, confesando públicamente sus pecados.7Pero al ver que muchos fariseos y saduceos venían a su bautismo, les dijo: ¡Generación de víboras! ¿Quién os enseñó a huir de la inminente ira venidera?8Dad, pues, frutos dignos de arrepentimiento,9y no digáis entre vosotros: A Abraham tenemos por padre, porque os digo que Dios puede levantar hijos a Abraham de estas piedras.10Y ya está puesta el hacha a la raíz de los árboles, de modo que todo árbol que no da buen fruto es cortado y echado al fuego.11Yo ciertamente os bautizo con agua para arrepentimiento, pero el que viene después de mí es más poderoso que yo, cuyas sandalias no soy digno de llevar. Él os bautizará con Espíritu Santo y fuego.12Tiene su aventador en la mano y limpiará bien su era. Recogerá su trigo en el granero y quemará la paja con fuego inextinguible.
El bautismo
13Llega entonces Jesús desde Galilea al Jordán, donde estaba Juan, para ser bautizado por él.14Pero él trataba de impedírselo diciendo: Soy yo el que necesita ser bautizado por ti, ¿y Tú vienes a mí?15Pero respondiendo Jesús, le dijo: Deja ahora, porque así nos es conveniente cumplir toda justicia. Entonces lo dejó.16Y Jesús, después que fue bautizado, subió enseguida del agua, y he aquí se abrieron los cielos, y vio al Espíritu de Dios descendiendo como una paloma que venía sobre Él.17Y he aquí una voz de los cielos que decía: Este es mi Hijo, el amado, en quien me complací.

1In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,2And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.3For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.4And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.5Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,6And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?8Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:9And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.10And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.11I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:12Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.13Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.14But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?15And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.
