Victoria filistea Captura del Arca y muerte de Elí

1 Por aquel tiempo Israel salió en pie de guerra al encuentro de los filisteos, y acamparon en Eben-ezer, y los filisteos acamparon en Afec. 2 Y los filisteos se dispusieron para el encuentro contra Israel, y extendiéndose la batalla, Israel fue derrotado ante los filisteos, los cuales mataron en el campo como cuatro mil hombres de la tropa. 3 Cuando el pueblo regresó al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron: ¿Por qué nos ha herido hoy YHVH ante los filisteos? Traigámonos el Arca del Pacto de YHVH desde Silo, para que Él pueda estar entre nosotros y salvarnos de mano de nuestros enemigos. 4 Y el pueblo envió a Silo, y trajeron de allí el Arca del Pacto de YHVH Sebaot, que habita entre los querubines; y estaban allí los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, con el Arca del Pacto de Dios. 5 Y cuando el Arca del Pacto de YHVH estuvo en el campamento, todo Israel gritó con tan grande júbilo que la tierra se estremeció. 6 Y cuando los filisteos oyeron el estruendo del júbilo, dijeron: ¿Qué es este estruendo de gran clamor en el campamento de los hebreos? Y se enteraron que el Arca de YHVH había llegado al campamento. 7 Y los filisteos tuvieron temor, y dijeron: ¡’Elohim ha llegado al campamento! Y decían: ¡Ay de nosotros, porque nunca ha sucedido antes cosa semejante! 8 ¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de la mano de este Dios poderoso? ¡Éste es el Dios que golpeó a Egipto con toda plaga en el desierto! 9 ¡Filisteos, esforzaos y sed hombres!, para que no seáis siervos de los hebreos como ellos lo fueron de vosotros. ¡Sed hombres y combatid! 10 Y combatieron los filisteos, e Israel fue derrotado, y cada hombre huyó a su tienda, y hubo una gran matanza, por cuanto cayeron de Israel treinta mil hombres de a pie. 11 Y el Arca de Dios fue tomada, y los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, fueron muertos. 12 Y aquel mismo día, cierto hombre de Benjamín corrió desde el campo de batalla hasta Silo, rasgados sus vestidos y echada tierra sobre su cabeza. 13 Y cuando llegó, he aquí Elí sentado en su sitial, atalayando junto al camino, porque su corazón temblaba a causa del Arca de Dios. Cuando aquel hombre llegó a la ciudad para informar, toda la ciudad dio gritos. 14 Y cuando Elí oyó el estruendo del griterío, dijo: ¿Qué significa todo ese alboroto? Y aquel hombre se apresuró, y llegó e informó a Elí. 15 Y Elí tenía ya noventa y ocho años de edad, y sus ojos estaban ya fijos, pues no podía ver. 16 Y aquel hombre dijo a Elí: Soy el que ha venido de la batalla; hoy escapé de la batalla. Y le preguntó: ¿Qué ha sucedido, hijo mío? 17 Y el mensajero respondió diciendo: Israel ha huido delante de los filisteos, y ha habido también una gran matanza entre el pueblo, y también tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, han sido muertos, y el Arca de Dios ha sido tomada. 18 Y cuando hizo mención del Arca de Dios, aconteció que cayó de su silla hacia atrás, junto a la puerta, y se le quebró la cerviz, y murió, porque era hombre viejo y pesado. Él había juzgado a Israel cuarenta años. 19 Y su nuera, la mujer de Finees, que estaba encinta y cercana al parto, al escuchar la noticia de que el Arca de Dios había sido tomada, y que su suegro y su marido habían muerto, se agachó, pues los dolores la habían acometido, y dio a luz. 20 Y en el momento de su muerte, las que estaban junto a ella decían: No tengas temor, porque has parido un hijo. Pero ella no respondió ni prestó atención. 21 Y llamó al niño Icabod, diciendo: ¡Traspasada es la gloria de Israel! Porque el Arca de Dios había sido capturada, y su suegro y su marido habían muerto. 22 Dijo pues: ¡Llevada en cautiverio es la gloria de Israel!, porque el Arca de Dios había sido capturada.

1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek. 2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men. 3 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies. 4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. 5 And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again. 6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp. 7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore. 8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight. 10 And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen. 11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain. 12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head. 13 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it , all the city cried out. 14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli. 15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see. 16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son? 17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken. 18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years. 19 And his daughter in law, Phinehas'wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her. 20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it . 21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband. 22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
