1Sucedió que cuando Saúl volvió de perseguir a los filisteos, le dieron aviso diciendo: He aquí, David está en el desierto de En-gadi.2Y tomando Saúl a tres mil hombres escogidos de todo Israel, salió en busca de David y sus hombres por las peñas de las cabras monteses.3Y cuando llegó a unos rediles de ovejas en el camino, donde había una cueva, Saúl entró en ella para cubrir sus pies, y David y sus hombres estaban sentados en la parte más interna de la cueva.4Y los hombres de David le dijeron: ¡Este es el día que te dijo YHVH: He aquí entrego tu enemigo en tu mano, y harás con él como te parezca! Entonces se levantó David y cortó cautelosamente la orilla del manto de Saúl.5Y después de esto, aconteció que el corazón de David le remordió por haber cortado la orilla del manto de Saúl.6Y dijo a sus hombres: ¡Líbreme YHVH de hacer tal cosa contra mi señor, el ungido de YHVH, que yo extienda mi mano contra él, pues es el ungido de YHVH!7Y con estas palabras David disuadió a los suyos, y no les permitió levantarse contra Saúl; de modo que Saúl salió de la cueva y siguió por el camino.8Enseguida se levantó también David, y saliendo de la cueva dio voces tras Saúl, diciendo: ¡Oh rey señor mío! Y mirando Saúl tras de sí, David inclinó su rostro a tierra y se postró.9En seguida dijo David a Saúl: ¿Por qué escuchas palabras de hombres que dicen: He aquí, David procura tu mal?10He aquí, en este mismo día están viendo tus ojos cómo YHVH te ha puesto en mi mano dentro de la cueva; y se habló de matarte, pero se tuvo compasión de ti, pues dije: ¡No extenderé mi mano contra mi señor, porque es el ungido de YHVH!11Y mira, padre mío, mira la orilla de tu manto en mi mano, pues al cortar la orilla de tu manto, no te he matado. Reconoce y considera que no hay maldad ni transgresión en mi mano, ni he pecado contra ti, aunque tú andas a la caza de mi vida para tomarla.12¡Juzgue YHVH entre tú y yo, y que YHVH me vengue de ti! Pero mi mano no será contra ti.13Como dice el proverbio de los antiguos: Del malo sale la maldad. Así que mi mano no será contra ti.14¿En pos de quién sale el rey de Israel? ¿A quién persigue? ¿A un perro muerto? ¿A una pulga?15Sea YHVH el juez, y juzgue entre tú y yo; y defienda mi causa y me libre de tu mano.16Y cuando David hubo terminado de decir esas palabras a Saúl, aconteció que Saúl dijo: ¿Es esta tu voz, hijo mío David? Entonces Saúl alzó su voz y lloró.17Y dijo a David: Más justo eres tú que yo, porque tú me has pagado con bien, y yo te he pagado con mal.18Tú has declarado hoy cómo me has hecho un bien, porque YHVH me puso en tu mano, y no me has matado.19Porque ¿qué hombre halla a su enemigo y lo deja ir indemne? ¡YHVH te galardone pues por lo que me has hecho hoy!20Y ahora, he aquí yo sé que de seguro has de reinar, y que el reino de Israel será estable en tu mano.21Ahora pues, júrame por YHVH que no exterminarás mi descendencia después de mí, ni borrarás mi nombre de la casa de mi padre.22Y David se lo juró a Saúl. Y Saúl se fue a su casa, y David y sus hombres subieron a los riscos.

1And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.2Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.3And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.4And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul' robe privily.5And it came to pass afterward, that David' heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul' skirt.6And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD' anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.7So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.8David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.9And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men' words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?10Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD' anointed.11Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.12The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.13As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.14After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.15The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.16And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.17And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.18And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.19For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.20And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.21Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father' house.22And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.
