La ceinture de lin

1 L’Eternel me parla ainsi: Va t’acheter une ceinture de lin et mets-la autour de la taille, mais ne la mouille pas. 2 Je m’achetai donc la ceinture, comme l’Eternel me l’avait demandé, et me la mis autour de la taille. 3 L’Eternel me parla une seconde fois pour me dire: 4 Prends la ceinture que tu as achetée et que tu portes à la taille, et mets-toi en route: va jusqu’au Perath* et là, enfouis-la dans une fente de rocher. 5 Je partis donc et je cachai la ceinture près du Perath, comme l’Eternel me l’avait ordonné. 6 Après bien des jours, l’Eternel me dit: Mets-toi en route, retourne sur les bords du Perath et reprends la ceinture que je t’ai ordonné de cacher là-bas. 7 Je me rendis donc près du Perath, je fouillai, et je pris la ceinture à l’endroit où je l’avais cachée, mais elle était tellement abîmée qu’elle ne pouvait plus servir à rien. 8 Alors l’Eternel me parla en ces termes: 9 Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel: C’est de cette manière que je vais abîmer ce qui fait la fierté des Judéens, la grande fierté de Jérusalem. 10 Ce peuple mauvais qui refuse de m’écouter, qui suit les penchants de son cœur obstiné, qui s’attache aux dieux étrangers pour leur vouer un culte et se prosterner devant eux, deviendra semblable à cette ceinture qui n’est plus bonne à rien. 11 Car, comme la ceinture est attachée à la taille d’un homme, ainsi je m’étais attaché toute la communauté d’Israël et toute celle de Juda – l’Eternel le déclare – pour qu’elles deviennent pour moi mon peuple et mon honneur, un sujet de louange, une parure. Mais ils ne m’ont pas écouté.

Le vin de la colère

12 Tu leur diras ceci: Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël: Toutes les cruches seront remplies de vin. Et ils te répondront: « Ne savons-nous pas que toutes les cruches seront remplies de vin? » 13 Tu leur diras alors: Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel: Je vais remplir d’ivresse* tous les habitants de ce pays-ci et les rois qui occupent le trône de David, ainsi que les prêtres et les prophètes, et tous les habitants de Jérusalem. 14 Puis je les briserai les uns contre les autres, les pères avec les fils, l’Eternel le déclare. Ni pitié, ni compassion, ni mansuétude, rien ne m’empêchera de les détruire.

Dernier avertissement

15 Ecoutez et prêtez l’oreille et ne soyez pas orgueilleux! C’est l’Eternel qui parle. 16 Rendez gloire à l’Eternel, votre Dieu, avant qu’il fasse venir les ténèbres et que vos pieds trébuchent sur les montagnes ╵où la nuit est tombée. Vous, vous attendez la lumière: il la transformera ╵en une obscurité profonde; oui, il la changera ╵en épaisses ténèbres. 17 Si vous n’écoutez pas, je pleurerai ╵secrètement sur votre orgueil, je pleurerai à chaudes larmes, mes yeux ruisselleront de larmes, car le troupeau de l’Eternel ╵va être emmené en captivité.

Message au roi

18 Déclare au roi ╵et à la reine mère*: « Asseyez-vous bien bas car le voilà tombé ╵de votre tête, votre superbe diadème. » 19 Les villes du Néguev ╵à présent sont fermées et plus personne ╵n’ouvre leurs portes, car tout Juda est déporté, il est déporté tout entier.

O Jérusalem !

20 Lève les yeux, Jérusalem, regarde ceux qui viennent du nord. Où donc est le troupeau ╵qui t’a été confié, et où sont les brebis ╵qui faisaient ta fierté? 21 Qu’auras-tu à redire ╵quand s’imposeront* comme maîtres ceux même à qui tu as appris ╵à te traiter ainsi? Les douleurs te prendront comme une femme qui enfante. 22 Et si tu te demandes: « Pourquoi tout cela m’est-il arrivé? » sache que c’est à cause ╵de tes nombreuses fautes que les pans de ta robe ╵ont été relevés* et qu’on s’en prend à toi ╵avec violence. 23 Un Ethiopien peut-il changer ╵la couleur de sa peau, un léopard les taches ╵de son pelage? De même, comment pourriez-vous ╵vous mettre à bien agir, vous qui êtes bien entraînés ╵à commettre le mal? 24 Aussi, moi, l’Eternel, ╵je vous disperserai comme des brins de paille ╵dans le vent du désert. 25 Tel est ton lot, ╵le sort que je te fixe, déclare l’Eternel, car tu m’as oublié pour placer ta confiance ╵dans de faux dieux. 26 C’est pourquoi moi aussi ╵je relève ta robe ╵jusque sur ton visage, et l’on verra ta honte. 27 J’ai vu tes adultères ╵et tes hennissements, tes prostitutions exécrables, tes idoles abominables sur toutes les hauteurs, ╵dans la campagne. Malheur à toi, Jérusalem, ╵tu es impure! Jusques à quand ╵cela va-t-il durer?

The Ruined Loincloth

1 Thus says the Lord to me, “Go and buy a linen loincloth and put it around your waist, and do not dip it in water.” 2 So I bought a loincloth according to the word of the Lord, and put it around my waist. 3 And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, 4 “Take the loincloth that you have bought, which is around your waist, and arise, go to the Euphrates and hide it there in a cleft of the rock.” 5 So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord commanded me. 6 And after many days the Lord said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there the loincloth that I commanded you to hide there.” 7 Then I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and I took the loincloth from the place where I had hidden it. And behold, the loincloth was spoiled; it was good for nothing. 8 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 9 “Thus says the Lord: Even so will I spoil the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem. 10 This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who stubbornly follow their own heart and have gone after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be like this loincloth, which is good for nothing. 11 For as the loincloth clings to the waist of a man, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, declares the Lord, that they might be for me a people, a name, a praise, and a glory, but they would not listen.

The Jars Filled with Wine

12 “You shall speak to them this word: ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, “Every jar shall be filled with wine.”’ And they will say to you, ‘Do we not indeed know that every jar will be filled with wine?’ 13 Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will fill with drunkenness all the inhabitants of this land: the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 14 And I will dash them one against another, fathers and sons together, declares the Lord. I will not pity or spare or have compassion, that I should not destroy them.’”

Exile Threatened

15 Hear and give ear; be not proud, for the Lord has spoken. 16 Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the twilight mountains, and while you look for light he turns it into gloom and makes it deep darkness. 17 But if you will not listen, my soul will weep in secret for your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly and run down with tears, because the Lord’s flock has been taken captive. 18 Say to the king and the queen mother: “Take a lowly seat, for your beautiful crown has come down from your head.” 19 The cities of the Negeb are shut up, with none to open them; all Judah is taken into exile, wholly taken into exile. 20 “Lift up your eyes and see those who come from the north. Where is the flock that was given you, your beautiful flock? 21 What will you say when they set as head over you those whom you yourself have taught to be friends to you? Will not pangs take hold of you like those of a woman in labor? 22 And if you say in your heart, ‘Why have these things come upon me?’ it is for the greatness of your iniquity that your skirts are lifted up and you suffer violence. 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then also you can do good who are accustomed to do evil. 24 I will scatter you* like chaff driven by the wind from the desert. 25 This is your lot, the portion I have measured out to you, declares the Lord, because you have forgotten me and trusted in lies. 26 I myself will lift up your skirts over your face, and your shame will be seen. 27 I have seen your abominations, your adulteries and neighings, your lewd whorings, on the hills in the field. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! How long will it be before you are made clean?”
