1Toute l’assemblée des Israélites s’éloigna étape par étape du désert de Sin selon les directives de l’Eternel. Ils campèrent à Rephidim où ils ne trouvèrent pas d’eau à boire.2Alors le peuple prit Moïse à partie en lui disant: Donne-nous de l’eau à boire! Moïse leur répondit: Pourquoi me prenez-vous à partie? Pourquoi voulez-vous forcer la main à l’Eternel?3Pressé par la soif, le peuple se plaignit de Moïse et dit: Pourquoi nous as-tu fait quitter l’Egypte? Est-ce pour nous faire mourir de soif ici, nous, nos enfants et nos troupeaux?4Moïse cria à l’Eternel en disant: Que puis-je faire pour ce peuple? Ils sont sur le point de me lapider!5L’Eternel dit à Moïse: Passe devant le peuple et emmène avec toi quelques responsables d’Israël. Prends à la main le bâton avec lequel tu as frappé le Nil et va!6Quant à moi, je vais me tenir là devant toi sur un rocher du mont Horeb; tu frapperas le rocher, de l’eau en jaillira et le peuple pourra boire*. Moïse fit ainsi en présence des responsables d’Israël.7Il appela ce lieu Massa et Meriba (Epreuve et Querelle), parce que les Israélites l’avaient pris à partie et parce qu’ils avaient voulu forcer la main à l’Eternel en disant: « L’Eternel est-il oui ou non au milieu de nous? »
Le combat contre les Amalécites
8Les Amalécites* vinrent attaquer Israël à Rephidim.9Alors Moïse dit à Josué*: Choisis-nous des guerriers et demain tu iras combattre les Amalécites. Moi, je me tiendrai au sommet de la colline, avec le bâton de Dieu à la main.10Josué se conforma aux instructions de Moïse. Il alla combattre les Amalécites, tandis que Moïse, Aaron et Hour* montèrent au sommet de la colline.11Or, lorsque Moïse levait la main, Israël avait l’avantage dans la bataille, et lorsqu’il la laissait retomber, Amalec l’emportait.12Comme les bras de Moïse se fatiguaient, Aaron et Hour prirent une pierre qu’ils placèrent sous lui pour le faire asseoir dessus, et ils lui soutinrent les bras, chacun d’un côté; ainsi ses bras tinrent ferme jusqu’au coucher du soleil,13et Josué remporta la victoire sur les Amalécites à la pointe de l’épée.14L’Eternel dit à Moïse: Consigne cela par écrit pour qu’on en garde le souvenir* et déclare à Josué que j’effacerai complètement le souvenir d’Amalec de sous le ciel*.15Moïse érigea un autel qu’il appela Adonaï-Nissi (Le Seigneur est ma bannière),16puis il ajouta: Puisqu’on s’est attaqué au trône de l’Eternel, l’Eternel fera la guerre à Amalec de génération en génération.

Water from the Rock
1All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.2Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?”3But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”4So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.”5And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.6Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.7And he called the name of the place Massah* and Meribah,* because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Israel Defeats Amalek
8Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.9So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”10So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.11Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.12But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.13And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.14Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”15And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner,16saying, “A hand upon the throne* of the Lord! The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
