David séjournait au désert et il s’aperçut que Saül était venu le poursuivre là.4Il envoya des éclaireurs en reconnaissance et apprit que Saül était effectivement arrivé.5Il se mit en route et parvint à l’endroit où Saül campait. Il repéra l’endroit précis où dormaient Saül et Abner, fils de Ner, son général. Saül était couché au milieu du camp et ses hommes campaient autour de lui.6David appela Ahimélek le Hittite et Abishaï, fils de Tserouya* et frère de Joab, et leur demanda: Qui de vous viendrait avec moi jusqu’à Saül dans le camp? Abishaï répondit: Je suis prêt à y aller avec toi.7David et Abishaï se glissèrent donc de nuit au milieu de la troupe. Ils trouvèrent Saül dormant au centre du camp, sa lance fichée en terre à son chevet. Abner et les soldats dormaient autour de lui.8Alors Abishaï dit à David: Cette nuit, Dieu livre ton ennemi en ton pouvoir. Permets-moi de le clouer au sol d’un seul coup de lance, je n’aurai pas à y revenir à deux fois.9– Non, lui dit David, ne le tue pas. Car qui resterait impuni après avoir porté la main sur celui à qui l’Eternel a conféré l’onction?10Aussi vrai que l’Eternel est vivant, ajouta-t-il, c’est l’Eternel qui le frappera, soit en le faisant mourir de mort naturelle, soit en le faisant périr à la guerre.11Que l’Eternel me garde de porter la main sur celui qui a reçu l’onction de la part de l’Eternel! Prenons seulement la lance qui est à son chevet et la cruche d’eau, et allons-nous-en.12David enleva la lance et la cruche d’eau qui étaient au chevet de Saül, et ils partirent. Personne ne les vit, personne ne s’aperçut de rien, personne ne se réveilla, tous dormaient, car l’Eternel avait fait tomber sur eux un profond sommeil.13David franchit la vallée et grimpa au sommet de la montagne au loin, à une bonne distance du camp de Saül.14Puis il se mit à crier en direction de l’armée d’Abner, fils de Ner: Eh, Abner! répondras-tu? Abner dit: Qui es-tu, toi qui oses interpeller le roi?15David reprit: Tu es un homme, toi, un vrai! Tu n’as pas ton pareil en Israël, n’est-ce pas? Alors pourquoi n’as-tu pas veillé sur le roi ton maître? Quelqu’un du peuple est venu pour tuer le roi, ton maître.16Ce n’est pas bien, ce que tu as fait là! Aussi vrai que l’Eternel est vivant, vous méritez tous la mort pour n’avoir pas veillé sur votre maître, sur celui qui a reçu l’onction de la part de l’Eternel! Regarde maintenant où sont la lance du roi et la cruche d’eau qui étaient à son chevet!17Saül reconnut la voix de David et dit: Est-ce bien toi que j’entends, mon fils David? David répondit: C’est bien ma voix, mon seigneur le roi!18Et il ajouta: Pourquoi mon seigneur poursuit-il ainsi son serviteur? Qu’ai-je fait? Quel crime ai-je commis?19Maintenant, que mon seigneur daigne écouter les paroles de son serviteur: Si c’est l’Eternel qui t’incite à agir ainsi contre moi, qu’il se laisse apaiser par mon offrande! Mais si ce sont des hommes qui t’excitent, qu’ils soient maudits devant l’Eternel, puisqu’ils m’ont banni pour m’empêcher de rester dans le pays accordé par l’Eternel comme possession à son peuple. Au fond, c’est comme s’ils disaient: « Va adorer des dieux étrangers »!20Mais maintenant, que mon sang ne soit pas versé loin de l’Eternel, car le roi d’Israël s’est mis en campagne pour chercher une misérable puce, comme on pourchasserait une perdrix dans les montagnes.21Alors Saül s’écria: J’ai commis une faute, reviens, mon fils David, je ne te ferai plus de mal, puisque cette nuit tu as épargné ma vie. J’ai agi comme un insensé et j’ai commis une grave erreur.22David répondit: Voici ta lance, ô roi! Envoie l’un de tes jeunes gens pour venir la prendre.23Que chacun de nous soit traité selon sa justice et sa fidélité par l’Eternel, car il t’avait livré aujourd’hui en mon pouvoir, mais je n’ai pas voulu porter la main sur celui qui a reçu l’onction de sa part.24Comme ta vie a été pour moi d’un grand prix aujourd’hui, ainsi ma vie sera d’un grand prix pour l’Eternel, et il me délivrera de toute détresse.25Alors Saül reprit: Sois béni, mon fils David! Certainement tu accompliras beaucoup de choses et tu réussiras tout ce que tu entreprendras. Puis David reprit son chemin, tandis que Saül retournait chez lui.

1Then the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is not David hiding himself on the hill of Hachilah, which is on the east of Jeshimon?”2So Saul arose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph with three thousand chosen men of Israel to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.3And Saul encamped on the hill of Hachilah, which is beside the road on the east of Jeshimon. But David remained in the wilderness. When he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness,4David sent out spies and learned that Saul had indeed come.5Then David rose and came to the place where Saul had encamped. And David saw the place where Saul lay, with Abner the son of Ner, the commander of his army. Saul was lying within the encampment, while the army was encamped around him.6Then David said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Joab’s brother Abishai the son of Zeruiah, “Who will go down with me into the camp to Saul?” And Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”7So David and Abishai went to the army by night. And there lay Saul sleeping within the encampment, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head, and Abner and the army lay around him.8Then Abishai said to David, “God has given your enemy into your hand this day. Now please let me pin him to the earth with one stroke of the spear, and I will not strike him twice.”9But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can put out his hand against the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless?”10And David said, “As the Lord lives, the Lord will strike him, or his day will come to die, or he will go down into battle and perish.11The Lord forbid that I should put out my hand against the Lord’s anointed. But take now the spear that is at his head and the jar of water, and let us go.”12So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul’s head, and they went away. No man saw it or knew it, nor did any awake, for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen upon them.13Then David went over to the other side and stood far off on the top of the hill, with a great space between them.14And David called to the army, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, “Will you not answer, Abner?” Then Abner answered, “Who are you who calls to the king?”15And David said to Abner, “Are you not a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord.16This thing that you have done is not good. As the Lord lives, you deserve to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, the Lord’s anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is and the jar of water that was at his head.”17Saul recognized David’s voice and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.”18And he said, “Why does my lord pursue after his servant? For what have I done? What evil is on my hands?19Now therefore let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is the Lord who has stirred you up against me, may he accept an offering, but if it is men, may they be cursed before the Lord, for they have driven me out this day that I should have no share in the heritage of the Lord, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’20Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of the Lord, for the king of Israel has come out to seek a single flea like one who hunts a partridge in the mountains.”21Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have acted foolishly, and have made a great mistake.”22And David answered and said, “Here is the spear, O king! Let one of the young men come over and take it.23The Lord rewards every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness, for the Lord gave you into my hand today, and I would not put out my hand against the Lord’s anointed.24Behold, as your life was precious this day in my sight, so may my life be precious in the sight of the Lord, and may he deliver me out of all tribulation.”25Then Saul said to David, “Blessed be you, my son David! You will do many things and will succeed in them.” So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.
