1Là-dessus David quitta la ville de Gath et alla se réfugier dans la grotte d’Adoullam*. Lorsque ses frères et tous les membres de sa famille l’apprirent, ils allèrent l’y rejoindre.2Et tous les gens qui étaient dans la détresse, tous ceux qui avaient des dettes et tous les mécontents se rallièrent à lui, et il devint leur chef. Il y eut ainsi quelque quatre cents hommes qui se regroupèrent autour de lui.3Plus tard, David se rendit de là à Mitspé de Moab et il dit au roi de Moab*: Permets, je te prie, à mon père et à ma mère de venir se réfugier chez vous jusqu’à ce que je sache ce que Dieu fera pour moi.4Il amena donc ses parents auprès du roi de Moab, et ils restèrent chez lui tout le temps que David passa dans son refuge fortifié.5Un jour, le prophète Gad dit à David: Ne reste pas dans cette forteresse. Pars et rentre au pays de Juda. David s’en alla et s’enfonça dans la forêt de Héreth.
Saül se venge sur Ahimélek et sa famille
6Saül apprit qu’on avait repéré David et ses hommes. Il siégeait à Guibéa sur la colline, à l’ombre d’un tamaris, sa lance à la main. Tous ses familiers se tenaient autour de lui.7Saül leur dit: Ecoutez bien, hommes de Benjamin: croyez-vous que le fils d’Isaï donnera à chacun de vous des champs et des vignes? Est-ce qu’il fera de vous tous des chefs de « milliers » et de « centaines »?8Alors pourquoi avez-vous tous comploté contre moi de sorte que personne ne m’a averti que mon fils a conclu un pacte avec le fils d’Isaï. Aucun de vous ne se soucie de moi et personne ne m’a prévenu que mon fils a dressé mon serviteur contre moi pour me tendre des pièges, comme cela apparaît aujourd’hui.9Doëg l’Edomite, qui était à la tête des fonctionnaires de Saül, répondit: J’ai vu le fils d’Isaï arriver à Nob, chez Ahimélek, le fils d’Ahitoub.10Celui-ci a consulté l’Eternel pour lui et lui a fourni des vivres. Il lui a aussi remis l’épée de Goliath le Philistin*.11Alors le roi envoya chercher le prêtre Ahimélek, fils d’Ahitoub, ainsi que tous les prêtres, membres de son groupe familial qui étaient à Nob. Tous vinrent se présenter devant le roi.12– Ecoute bien, fils d’Ahitoub! lui dit Saül quand celui-ci fut devant lui. – Oui, mon seigneur, j’écoute, lui répondit-il.13– Pourquoi avez-vous comploté contre moi, toi et le fils d’Isaï? lui dit Saül. Tu lui as donné du pain et une épée, et tu as consulté Dieu pour lui, pour qu’il se révolte contre moi et me tende des pièges, comme c’est le cas aujourd’hui.14Ahimélek répondit au roi en disant: Y a-t-il parmi tous tes fonctionnaires quelqu’un d’aussi fidèle que David? De plus, c’est le gendre du roi. Et n’est-il pas le chef de ta garde personnelle? N’est-il pas hautement honoré à la cour royale?15Et si j’ai consulté Dieu pour lui, était-ce la première fois? Je n’ai jamais eu l’idée de comploter contre toi. Que le roi ne mette pas sur mon compte ni sur celui d’aucun membre de mon groupe familial une telle chose, car ton serviteur ignorait absolument tout de cette affaire.16Le roi dit: Ahimélek, tu mourras, toi et tout ton groupe familial, c’est décidé.17Puis il ordonna à ses gardes qui se tenaient près de lui: Allez, mettez à mort ces prêtres de l’Eternel, parce qu’eux aussi ont soutenu David. Ils savaient qu’il était en fuite et ils ne m’en ont pas averti. Mais les gardes refusèrent de porter la main sur les prêtres de l’Eternel.18Alors le roi ordonna à Doëg: Vas-y, toi, exécute ces prêtres. Doëg l’Edomite s’avança et ce fut lui qui tua les prêtres. Il mit à mort en ce jour quatre-vingt-cinq hommes portant le vêtement sacerdotal en lin.19Saül fit aussi massacrer par l’épée tous les autres habitants de Nob, la ville des prêtres; tous y passèrent: hommes, femmes, enfants, nourrissons, bœufs, ânes, brebis.20Un fils d’Ahimélek, fils d’Ahitoub, nommé Abiatar réussit cependant à s’échapper et il s’enfuit auprès de David.21Il lui annonça que Saül avait fait tuer les prêtres de l’Eternel.22David s’exclama: Je m’étais bien douté, l’autre jour, que Doëg l’Edomite, qui était aussi à Nob, ne manquerait pas d’informer Saül de tout ce qui s’est passé. C’est donc moi qui suis la cause de la mort de toutes les personnes de ton groupe familial.23Maintenant, reste avec moi et ne crains rien. Nous avons un ennemi commun, toi et moi, qui en veut à notre vie, mais auprès de moi tu seras en sécurité.

David at the Cave of Adullam
1David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him.2And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul,* gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him about four hundred men.3And David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab. And he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother stay* with you, till I know what God will do for me.”4And he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.5Then the prophet Gad said to David, “Do not remain in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah.” So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.
Saul Kills the Priests at Nob
6Now Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men who were with him. Saul was sitting at Gibeah under the tamarisk tree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him.7And Saul said to his servants who stood about him, “Hear now, people of Benjamin; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds,8that all of you have conspired against me? No one discloses to me when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse. None of you is sorry for me or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day.”9Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, “I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub,10and he inquired of the Lord for him and gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”11Then the king sent to summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were at Nob, and all of them came to the king.12And Saul said, “Hear now, son of Ahitub.” And he answered, “Here I am, my lord.”13And Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword and have inquired of God for him, so that he has risen against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?”14Then Ahimelech answered the king, “And who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, and captain over* your bodyguard, and honored in your house?15Is today the first time that I have inquired of God for him? No! Let not the king impute anything to his servant or to all the house of my father, for your servant has known nothing of all this, much or little.”16And the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house.”17And the king said to the guard who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand also is with David, and they knew that he fled and did not disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king would not put out their hand to strike the priests of the Lord.18Then the king said to Doeg, “You turn and strike the priests.” And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests, and he killed on that day eighty-five persons who wore the linen ephod.19And Nob, the city of the priests, he put to the sword; both man and woman, child and infant, ox, donkey and sheep, he put to the sword.20But one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.21And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord.22And David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father’s house.23Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. With me you shall be in safekeeping.”
