Quel tort lui ai-je fait pour qu’il veuille me faire mourir?2Jonathan lui répondit: Dieu te garde de cette pensée! Il n’est pas question que tu meures. Mon père n’entreprend rien sans m’en parler, qu’il s’agisse d’une affaire importante ou d’une petite chose. Pourquoi me cacherait-il ce projet-là? Certainement, il n’en est rien.3Mais David insista: Je te jure pourtant qu’il en est bien ainsi. Seulement ton père sait très bien que je jouis de ta faveur. Il a dû se dire: « Il ne faut pas que Jonathan l’apprenne, il en serait trop affligé! » Mais aussi vrai que l’Eternel est vivant, aussi vrai que tu es toi-même en vie, je ne suis qu’à deux doigts de la mort.4Alors Jonathan demanda à David: Que voudrais-tu que je fasse pour toi? Je ferai ce que tu désires.5David lui répondit: Ecoute: demain c’est la fête de la nouvelle lune*, je devrais normalement dîner à la table royale. Permets-moi de m’absenter! Je me cacherai dans la campagne jusqu’à après-demain soir.6Si ton père s’enquiert à mon sujet, tu lui diras: « David m’a instamment demandé la permission d’aller à Bethléhem, sa ville natale, pour y participer au sacrifice annuel avec toute sa famille. »7S’il répond: « C’est bien! », alors moi, ton serviteur, je n’ai rien à craindre. Mais s’il se met en colère, tu sauras qu’il a résolu ma perte.8Puisque tu t’es lié à moi, ton serviteur, par un pacte d’amitié au nom de l’Eternel, agis envers moi avec bienveillance. Et si je suis coupable de quoi que ce soit, ce n’est pas la peine de me livrer à ton père: mets-moi toi-même à mort.9– Jamais de la vie, s’exclama Jonathan. Si je constate que mon père a véritablement résolu ta perte, je te jure que je t’en informerai.10Mais David lui demanda: Comment me préviendras-tu si ton père te répond durement à mon sujet?11Jonathan proposa à David: Viens, sortons dans la campagne. Ils sortirent tous deux dans la campagne.12Jonathan dit: Par l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël, je te promets que demain ou après-demain, à cette heure-ci, j’essaierai de savoir quelles sont les dispositions de mon père à ton égard. Si elles te sont favorables, je te le ferai savoir.13Mais si mon père veut te nuire, alors que l’Eternel me punisse très sévèrement si je ne t’en informe pas! Dans ce cas, je te ferai partir et tu iras en paix. Puisse alors l’Eternel être avec toi comme il a été avec mon père!14Plus tard, si je suis encore en vie, agis envers moi avec la bienveillance à laquelle tu t’es engagé devant l’Eternel. Et si je viens à mourir,15tu ne cesseras jamais d’agir avec bienveillance envers les membres de ma famille – même lorsque l’Eternel aura fait disparaître tous tes ennemis sans exception de la surface de la terre*.16Ainsi Jonathan conclut un pacte avec David et sa famille en déclarant: Que l’Eternel fasse payer les ennemis de David!17Puis il lui fit encore une fois prêter serment au nom de l’affection qu’il lui portait, car il l’aimait comme sa propre personne.18Jonathan reprit: Demain, c’est la fête de la nouvelle lune, on remarquera ton absence à table, car ta place restera vide.19Après-demain, tu descendras vite jusqu’à l’endroit où tu t’étais caché le jour où tout cela a commencé; tu te tiendras près de la pierre d’Ezel.20Je viendrai et je tirerai trois flèches dans cette direction, sur une cible que j’aurai choisie,21puis j’enverrai mon jeune serviteur les chercher. Si je lui crie: « Regarde, les flèches sont derrière toi, reviens les ramasser! » alors tu peux revenir, car tout va bien pour toi. Aussi vrai que l’Eternel est vivant, tu n’auras rien à craindre.22Mais si je crie au jeune homme: « Va plus loin, les flèches sont plus loin que toi! » alors pars, car l’Eternel te fait partir.23Mais l’Eternel restera à jamais le garant pour moi et toi de notre engagement l’un envers l’autre.
Saül est résolu à faire mourir David
24David alla donc se cacher dans la campagne. Le soir de la célébration de la nouvelle lune, le roi se mit à table pour le repas.25Il s’assit comme d’habitude sur le siège adossé au mur qui lui était réservé. Jonathan se mit en face*, et Abner* à côté de lui. La place de David resta vide.26Saül ne fit aucune remarque ce jour-là. Il pensait qu’il avait dû contracter accidentellement quelque impureté rituelle. – Certainement il n’est pas pur, se disait-il*.27Mais le second jour de la nouvelle lune, comme la place de David restait encore inoccupée, Saül demanda à son fils Jonathan: Pourquoi le fils d’Isaï n’est-il pas venu au repas ni hier, ni aujourd’hui?28Jonathan répondit à Saül: David m’a demandé avec insistance la permission d’aller jusqu’à Bethléhem.29Il m’a dit: « Laisse-moi partir, je te prie, car nous devons célébrer un sacrifice de famille à la ville, et mon frère m’a ordonné d’y assister. Veuille donc m’accorder la faveur de pouvoir m’absenter pour voir mes frères. » C’est pour cela qu’il n’est pas venu à la table du roi.30Alors Saül se mit en colère contre Jonathan et lui cria: Fils de chienne, fils de rebelle! Crois-tu que je ne sais pas que tu as pris parti pour le fils d’Isaï, à ta honte et à celle de ta mère?31Aussi longtemps que le fils d’Isaï sera en vie, tu ne pourras pas t’imposer ni établir ta royauté. C’est pourquoi, fais-le chercher et ordonne qu’on me l’amène sans retard, car il mérite la mort.32Jonathan répliqua à Saül son père: Pourquoi devrait-il mourir? Qu’a-t-il fait?33Alors Saül brandit sa lance contre lui pour le frapper. Jonathan comprit que son père avait fermement décidé de faire mourir David.34Il se leva de table dans une grande colère et ne mangea rien ce jour-là, car il était trop affligé à cause de la manière injurieuse dont son père avait traité David.
Jonathan prévient David des intentions hostiles de son père
35Le lendemain matin, Jonathan se rendit dans la campagne à l’endroit convenu avec David. Un jeune serviteur l’accompagnait.36Il lui dit: Cours ramasser les flèches que je vais tirer! Le garçon courut en avant et Jonathan tira une flèche au-delà du garçon.37Quand le serviteur s’approcha de l’endroit où la flèche s’était plantée, Jonathan lui cria: La flèche n’est-elle pas plus loin que toi?38Vite, dépêche-toi! Ne reste pas là! Le serviteur de Jonathan ramassa la flèche et revint vers son maître39sans se douter de rien. Seuls Jonathan et David comprenaient la chose.40Jonathan remit son arc et ses flèches à son serviteur et lui dit: Va les rapporter dans la ville!41Après son départ, David sortit de sa cachette du côté du sud et se prosterna trois fois devant Jonathan, le visage contre terre, puis ils s’embrassèrent longuement en pleurant, David encore plus que Jonathan.42Alors Jonathan lui dit: Va en paix, puisque nous nous sommes engagés l’un envers l’autre par serment au nom de l’Eternel en disant: Que l’Eternel soit garant entre toi et moi, entre tes descendants et les miens, à tout jamais.

Jonathan Warns David
1Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my guilt? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?”2And he said to him, “Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. And why should my father hide this from me? It is not so.”3But David vowed again, saying, “Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he thinks, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But truly, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”4Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you say, I will do for you.”5David said to Jonathan, “Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit at table with the king. But let me go, that I may hide myself in the field till the third day at evening.6If your father misses me at all, then say, ‘David earnestly asked leave of me to run to Bethlehem his city, for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the clan.’7If he says, ‘Good!’ it will be well with your servant, but if he is angry, then know that harm is determined by him.8Therefore deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the Lord with you. But if there is guilt in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?”9And Jonathan said, “Far be it from you! If I knew that it was determined by my father that harm should come to you, would I not tell you?”10Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you roughly?”11And Jonathan said to David, “Come, let us go out into the field.” So they both went out into the field.12And Jonathan said to David, “The Lord, the God of Israel, be witness!* When I have sounded out my father, about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if he is well disposed toward David, shall I not then send and disclose it to you?13But should it please my father to do you harm, the Lord do so to Jonathan and more also if I do not disclose it to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. May the Lord be with you, as he has been with my father.14If I am still alive, show me the steadfast love of the Lord, that I may not die;15and do not cut off* your steadfast love from my house forever, when the Lord cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.”16And Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “May* the Lord take vengeance on David’s enemies.”17And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul.18Then Jonathan said to him, “Tomorrow is the new moon, and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.19On the third day go down quickly to the place where you hid yourself when the matter was in hand, and remain beside the stone heap.*20And I will shoot three arrows to the side of it, as though I shot at a mark.21And behold, I will send the boy, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I say to the boy, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you, take them,’ then you are to come, for, as the Lord lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger.22But if I say to the youth, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond you,’ then go, for the Lord has sent you away.23And as for the matter of which you and I have spoken, behold, the Lord is between you and me forever.”24So David hid himself in the field. And when the new moon came, the king sat down to eat food.25The king sat on his seat, as at other times, on the seat by the wall. Jonathan sat opposite,* and Abner sat by Saul’s side, but David’s place was empty.26Yet Saul did not say anything that day, for he thought, “Something has happened to him. He is not clean; surely he is not clean.”27But on the second day, the day after the new moon, David’s place was empty. And Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why has not the son of Jesse come to the meal, either yesterday or today?”28Jonathan answered Saul, “David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem.29He said, ‘Let me go, for our clan holds a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away and see my brothers.’ For this reason he has not come to the king’s table.”30Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman, do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness?31For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Therefore send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.”32Then Jonathan answered Saul his father, “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?”33But Saul hurled his spear at him to strike him. So Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death.34And Jonathan rose from the table in fierce anger and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had disgraced him.35In the morning Jonathan went out into the field to the appointment with David, and with him a little boy.36And he said to his boy, “Run and find the arrows that I shoot.” As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.37And when the boy came to the place of the arrow that Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after the boy and said, “Is not the arrow beyond you?”38And Jonathan called after the boy, “Hurry! Be quick! Do not stay!” So Jonathan’s boy gathered up the arrows and came to his master.39But the boy knew nothing. Only Jonathan and David knew the matter.40And Jonathan gave his weapons to his boy and said to him, “Go and carry them to the city.”41And as soon as the boy had gone, David rose from beside the stone heap* and fell on his face to the ground and bowed three times. And they kissed one another and wept with one another, David weeping the most.42Then Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, because we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘The Lord shall be between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’” And he rose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.*
