Les Syriens assiègent Samarie

1 Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie*, mobilisa toute son armée et, assisté de trente-deux rois alliés*, de chevaux et de chars de guerre, il alla assiéger la ville de Samarie* et se prépara à lui donner l’assaut. 2 Avant cela, il envoya dans la ville des messagers à Achab, le roi d’Israël: 3 il lui fit dire: Voici un message de la part de Ben-Hadad: « Livre-moi ton argent et ton or, ainsi que tes femmes et les plus vigoureux de tes fils. » 4 Le roi d’Israël répondit: A tes ordres, mon seigneur le roi, je me livre à toi avec tout ce qui m’appartient. 5 Les messagers vinrent de nouveau et dirent: Voici un message de la part de Ben-Hadad: « Je t’ai envoyé l’ordre de me livrer ton argent et ton or, tes femmes et tes fils. 6 J’enverrai donc demain à cette heure-ci mes officiers chez toi; ils fouilleront ta maison et celles de tes hauts fonctionnaires, ils prendront tout ce qui a de la valeur à tes yeux et l’emporteront. » 7 Alors le roi d’Israël convoqua tous les responsables du pays et leur dit: Vous pouvez constater que cet homme nous veut du mal, car il m’a fait réclamer mes femmes et mes fils, mon argent et mon or, et je ne lui avais rien refusé! 8 Tous les responsables et tout le peuple dirent à Achab: Ne l’écoute pas! N’accepte pas! 9 Alors Achab répondit aux messagers de Ben-Hadad: Dites à mon seigneur le roi: « Je ferai tout ce que tu as fait demander à ton serviteur la première fois, mais je ne puis céder à tes nouvelles exigences. » Les messagers allèrent rapporter cette réponse à leur maître. 10 Alors Ben-Hadad envoya ce message au roi Achab: Que les dieux me punissent très sévèrement, si je laisse subsister de Samarie assez de poussière pour remplir les mains de tous les guerriers qui me suivent. 11 Mais le roi d’Israël dit aux messagers: Allez donc lui dire: « Que celui qui part au combat ne se vante pas comme celui qui en revient! » 12 Lorsque Ben-Hadad entendit cette réponse, il était en train de boire avec les rois alliés sous les tentes*. Il commanda à ses officiers: En position pour l’attaque! Et ils disposèrent leurs troupes pour donner l’assaut à la ville.

L’intervention d’un prophète et victoire d’Israël

13 A ce moment, un prophète vint trouver Achab, le roi d’Israël, et lui dit: Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel: « As-tu vu cette immense armée? Je vais la livrer aujourd’hui en ton pouvoir, ainsi tu sauras que je suis l’Eternel. » 14 Achab demanda: Par qui l’Eternel la livrera-t-il? Il répondit: Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel: « Je la livrerai par les jeunes recrues des chefs des provinces. » Achab demanda encore: Et qui devra engager le combat? Le prophète répondit: C’est toi. 15 Alors Achab passa en revue les jeunes recrues des chefs des provinces, et il s’en trouva 232. Puis il recensa aussi toute l’armée des Israélites, et ils étaient sept mille. 16 Ils firent une sortie à midi: Ben-Hadad était en train de s’enivrer sous les tentes avec les trente-deux rois venus à son aide. 17 Les jeunes recrues des chefs des provinces sortirent les premiers. Ben-Hadad envoya des hommes voir ce qui se passait. On lui fit ce rapport: Des hommes sont sortis de Samarie. 18 – Que ce soit pour demander la paix ou au contraire pour nous attaquer qu’ils sont sortis, amenez-les-moi vivants! 19 Les recrues et l’armée qui les suivait sortirent de la ville. 20 Chacun s’acharna contre un adversaire et l’abattit, si bien que les Syriens prirent la fuite. Les Israélites se lancèrent à leur poursuite. Ben-Hadad, le roi de Syrie, se sauva sur un cheval avec d’autres cavaliers. 21 Le roi d’Israël lança le gros de ses troupes et extermina les chevaux et les chars ennemis. Il fit subir une grande défaite aux Syriens.

La nouvelle victoire d’Israël

22 Alors le prophète vint trouver le roi d’Israël et lui dit: Va de l’avant avec courage, fortifie tes positions, examine et réfléchis à ce que tu dois faire, car l’année prochaine à la même époque, le roi de Syrie reviendra t’attaquer. 23 Les ministres du roi de Syrie lui dirent: Leur Dieu est un Dieu des montagnes, c’est pourquoi ils nous ont vaincus. Attaquons-les en plaine et, sûrement, nous l’emporterons sur eux. 24 Voici donc ce que tu devrais faire. Destitue tous ces rois de leurs postes et remplace-les par des gouverneurs. 25 Ensuite, recrute une armée aussi nombreuse que celle que tu as perdue, avec autant de chevaux et de chars. Puis nous les combattrons dans la plaine et, certainement, nous les vaincrons. Ben-Hadad suivit leur conseil et fit tout ce qu’ils lui avaient proposé. 26 L’année suivante, à la même époque, il passa les Syriens en revue et s’avança jusqu’à la ville d’Apheq* pour attaquer Israël. 27 De leur côté, les Israélites furent aussi passés en revue et, pourvus de ravitaillement, ils se préparèrent à les affronter. Ils établirent leur camp en face d’eux, mais leurs troupes ressemblaient à deux petits troupeaux de chèvres, alors que les Syriens couvraient toute la plaine. 28 Alors l’homme de Dieu vint trouver le roi d’Israël et lui dit: Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel: « Les Syriens prétendent que je suis un Dieu des montagnes et non pas un Dieu des plaines. A cause de cela, je livrerai toute cette immense multitude en ton pouvoir. Ainsi vous saurez que je suis l’Eternel. » 29 Pendant sept jours, les deux armées campèrent l’une en face de l’autre. Le septième jour, la bataille s’engagea, et les Israélites tuèrent cent mille fantassins syriens en un seul jour.

Achab fait alliance avec le roi de Syrie

30 Les survivants s’enfuirent à la ville d’Apheq où le rempart s’écroula sur vingt-sept mille rescapés. Ben-Hadad s’était enfui et réfugié dans la ville et il s’y cachait en passant de chambre en chambre. 31 Les ministres lui dirent: Ecoute, nous avons entendu dire que les rois d’Israël sont des rois pleins de bienveillance. Permets-nous de nous revêtir des habits de toile de sac et d’entourer nos têtes de cordes*. Nous nous rendrons au roi d’Israël, et peut-être te laissera-t-il la vie sauve. 32 Ils revêtirent donc des habits de toile de sac et mirent des cordes autour de leurs têtes, puis ils se rendirent chez le roi d’Israël et lui dirent: Ton serviteur Ben-Hadad te fait dire: « Laisse-moi la vie sauve! » Achab leur demanda: Il est donc encore vivant? Eh bien, il sera mon allié. 33 Ces hommes prirent cette parole comme un signe favorable et s’empressèrent de prendre Achab au mot. – Oui, lui dirent-ils, Ben-Hadad sera ton allié! Achab ordonna: Allez le chercher! Ben-Hadad sortit de sa cachette et vint se présenter à lui. Achab le fit monter sur son char. 34 Ben-Hadad lui dit: Je te restituerai les villes que mon père a prises à ton père, et tu pourras établir des comptoirs à Damas, comme mon père en avait installés à Samarie. – Et moi, reprit Achab, je te rendrai la liberté et je conclurai une alliance avec toi. Il conclut donc une alliance avec lui et le laissa repartir libre.

Un disciple des prophètes reproche cette alliance à Achab

35 Sur ordre de l’Eternel, l’un des disciples des prophètes demanda à son compagnon de le frapper. Mais cet homme refusa de le frapper. 36 – Eh bien, lui dit le premier, puisque tu n’as pas obéi à l’ordre de l’Eternel, un lion t’attaquera et te frappera lorsque tu m’auras quitté. En effet, quand il l’eut quitté, un lion se jeta sur lui et le frappa. 37 Le premier alla trouver un autre homme et lui adressa la même demande. Cet homme le frappa et le blessa. 38 Alors le disciple des prophètes, après s’être rendu méconnaissable en se mettant un bandeau sur les yeux, alla se poster sur le chemin que le roi devait prendre. 39 Lorsque le roi passa, il lui cria: Ton serviteur a pris part au combat. Pendant la bataille, un homme a quitté les rangs et m’a amené un prisonnier en disant: « Surveille-moi cet homme, si tu le laisses s’échapper, tu prendras sa place, ou bien tu devras me verser trois mille pièces d’argent! » 40 Or, pendant que j’étais occupé ça et là, le prisonnier a disparu. Le roi d’Israël lui dit: Tu as prononcé toi-même le verdict! 41 Aussitôt le disciple des prophètes enleva le bandeau qui lui masquait les yeux, et le roi d’Israël reconnut que c’était un des disciples des prophètes. 42 Il dit alors au roi: Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel: Tu as laissé échapper d’entre tes mains l’homme que je m’étais voué. C’est pourquoi tu prendras sa place et ton peuple périra à la place du sien. 43 Le roi d’Israël s’en retourna chez lui maussade et abattu. C’est ainsi qu’il regagna Samarie.

Ahab’s Wars with Syria

1 Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his army together. Thirty-two kings were with him, and horses and chariots. And he went up and closed in on Samaria and fought against it. 2 And he sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel and said to him, “Thus says Ben-hadad: 3 ‘Your silver and your gold are mine; your best wives and children also are mine.’” 4 And the king of Israel answered, “As you say, my lord, O king, I am yours, and all that I have.” 5 The messengers came again and said, “Thus says Ben-hadad: ‘I sent to you, saying, “Deliver to me your silver and your gold, your wives and your children.” 6 Nevertheless I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house and the houses of your servants and lay hands on whatever pleases you and take it away.’” 7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land and said, “Mark, now, and see how this man is seeking trouble, for he sent to me for my wives and my children, and for my silver and my gold, and I did not refuse him.” 8 And all the elders and all the people said to him, “Do not listen or consent.” 9 So he said to the messengers of Ben-hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you first demanded of your servant I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’” And the messengers departed and brought him word again. 10 Ben-hadad sent to him and said, “The gods do so to me and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me.” 11 And the king of Israel answered, “Tell him, ‘Let not him who straps on his armor boast himself as he who takes it off.’” 12 When Ben-hadad heard this message as he was drinking with the kings in the booths, he said to his men, “Take your positions.” And they took their positions against the city.

Ahab Defeats Ben-hadad

13 And behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel and said, “Thus says the Lord, Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will give it into your hand this day, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” 14 And Ahab said, “By whom?” He said, “Thus says the Lord, By the servants of the governors of the districts.” Then he said, “Who shall begin the battle?” He answered, “You.” 15 Then he mustered the servants of the governors of the districts, and they were 232. And after them he mustered all the people of Israel, seven thousand. 16 And they went out at noon, while Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the booths, he and the thirty-two kings who helped him. 17 The servants of the governors of the districts went out first. And Ben-hadad sent out scouts, and they reported to him, “Men are coming out from Samaria.” 18 He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive. Or if they have come out for war, take them alive.” 19 So these went out of the city, the servants of the governors of the districts and the army that followed them. 20 And each struck down his man. The Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them, but Ben-hadad king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen. 21 And the king of Israel went out and struck the horses and chariots, and struck the Syrians with a great blow. 22 Then the prophet came near to the king of Israel and said to him, “Come, strengthen yourself, and consider well what you have to do, for in the spring the king of Syria will come up against you.” 23 And the servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their gods are gods of the hills, and so they were stronger than we. But let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. 24 And do this: remove the kings, each from his post, and put commanders in their places, 25 and muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.” And he listened to their voice and did so.

Ahab Defeats Ben-hadad Again

26 In the spring, Ben-hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel. 27 And the people of Israel were mustered and were provisioned and went against them. The people of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats, but the Syrians filled the country. 28 And a man of God came near and said to the king of Israel, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The Lord is a god of the hills but he is not a god of the valleys,” therefore I will give all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’” 29 And they encamped opposite one another seven days. Then on the seventh day the battle was joined. And the people of Israel struck down of the Syrians 100,000 foot soldiers in one day. 30 And the rest fled into the city of Aphek, and the wall fell upon 27,000 men who were left. Ben-hadad also fled and entered an inner chamber in the city. 31 And his servants said to him, “Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Let us put sackcloth around our waists and ropes on our heads and go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life.” 32 So they tied sackcloth around their waists and put ropes on their heads and went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-hadad says, ‘Please, let me live.’” And he said, “Does he still live? He is my brother.” 33 Now the men were watching for a sign, and they quickly took it up from him and said, “Yes, your brother Ben-hadad.” Then he said, “Go and bring him.” Then Ben-hadad came out to him, and he caused him to come up into the chariot. 34 And Ben-hadad said to him, “The cities that my father took from your father I will restore, and you may establish bazaars for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.” And Ahab said, “I will let you go on these terms.” So he made a covenant with him and let him go.

A Prophet Condemns Ben-hadad’s Release

35 And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow at the command of the Lord, “Strike me, please.” But the man refused to strike him. 36 Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, behold, as soon as you have gone from me, a lion shall strike you down.” And as soon as he had departed from him, a lion met him and struck him down. 37 Then he found another man and said, “Strike me, please.” And the man struck him—struck him and wounded him. 38 So the prophet departed and waited for the king by the way, disguising himself with a bandage over his eyes. 39 And as the king passed, he cried to the king and said, “Your servant went out into the midst of the battle, and behold, a soldier turned and brought a man to me and said, ‘Guard this man; if by any means he is missing, your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent* of silver.’ 40 And as your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.” The king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you yourself have decided it.” 41 Then he hurried to take the bandage away from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. 42 And he said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction,* therefore your life shall be for his life, and your people for his people.’” 43 And the king of Israel went to his house vexed and sullen and came to Samaria.
